Lotion

Sarah: iVi Scents iCing Body Frosting is amazing! It’s not like yourregular body butter, it’s super light and not greasy but still moisturizing. Theirclaim is that you’ll “experience the softest skin you’ve ever felt after just oneuse”, which is true! Plus, it’s a small business with a female entrepreneur(need to support fellow business-women!), so you get personal attention. I lovethat she puts a bible verse on the package! $13

Grace: Trader Joe's Moisturizing Cream isreally moisturizing and it's all natural! $6

Erin: Bath & Body Works Body Lotions arewonderful moisturizers. Vanilla scents are always my favorite, like their WarmVanilla Sugar. $10.50

Haylie: Living in Florida, you are goingto sweat! This is why I like Bath &Body Works Body Lotion because it islightweight and won’t make your legs get really sweaty feeling if you dosweat. Plus, they all smell wonderful! I like to use the Charmed Life scent becauseit isn’t strong like most of the BBW lotions. The Charmed Life smells likesweet vanilla and fruit and it smells clean! $10.50

Soap/Body Wash

Sarah: I love iVi Scents iSmell Vegan Soap becauseit’s very moisturizing, unlike most soaps, because it doesn’t have those toxinsthat strip the protective oils from your skin. It’s vegan, so it’s not made ofcow fat, which is always a bonus, since I don’t want to be using that on myskin! $7

Grace: I like Dove Soap because it smells goodwithout drying my skin out too much and doesn’t leave that “scum on your skin”!$10 for 6 bars

Erin: Softsoap Pomegranate and MangoMoisturizing Body Wash lasts a long time, cleanses well, and smellsamazing! $4

Haylie: I like a strongsmelling body wash because I like to step out of the shower and people knowthat I am clean! Haha! I like the Bathand Body Works BodyLotion in Sensual Amber because it has avery strong smell of amber. (This was my favorite scent of everything but itwas knocked to second by Twilight Woods) It wakes you up and invigorates you!$10.50

Nail Color

Sarah: Mint Candy Apple by Essie Nail Color is a gorgeous vintage minty shade; it reminds me of the color that was popular in the 50’s. I love it! It’s so unique and cute. (I’m actually wearing it on my nails in the header if you can see) $8

Grace: Revlon Nail Enamel in the color "Cherries in the Snow" is so rich and pretty! $5 (but I paid $1 with coupons lol!)

Erin: I love the colors that Pure Ice offers, if you use a couple coats they cover well and last a while! $2 -$3

Haylie: I like my toenails to always be painted! I feel so weird if they are ‘naked’! I also love to add a little sparkle and glitter to them! The Wet n Wild Fast Dry polish is an amazing nail polish! It dries nice and fast and does not chip easily (which is great for me because I’m very accident prone). The Party of Five Glitters is five different glitter colors in one (hence the name)! My dad likes to say I have confetti toenails which I don’t mind because they are AWESOME! $2

Fragrance

Sarah: Daisy by Marc Jacobs is for anyone! A playful, carefree floral scent, it adapts to your body’s chemistry to be a scent customized to you. It’s great for perfume beginners, but it’s also good for a perfume lover who wants a soft every day scent. It comes in nice sizes to try out before you go full size: Rollerball $20 or Travel Spray $35

Grace: I love Bath & Body Works Sea Island Cotton Fragrance Mist because it smells so sweet, clean and pretty! I'm not a fan of heavy, suffocating scents! $12

Erin: I love the different scents of Pink by Victoria Secret, I have Pink and Purple. You can buy this brand at Bath & Body Works also. $18

Haylie: Bath & Body Works Twilight Woods Fragrance Mist: I did an article on a lot of my favorite BBW a few months back, but this HAS to be my favorite fragrance of theirs. Their website says that it smells like juicy berries, soft mimosa, apricot nectar and warm woods, but to me, it simply makes me feel like I’m walking through an enchanted wood (which, ironically, the website says it was inspired by!). $12

You can also buy a bottle of Twilight Woods with shimmer in it! It costs two dollars more, but it is great for special occasions, or an enchanted walk in the woods ;)

Deodorant

Sarah: My sisterrecently introduced me to DegreemotionSENSE deodorant when I felt like my other deodorant wasn’t doing thejob any more as I was around heat such as blow dryers and flat irons all day atwork. This stuff really does work! It’s supposed to re-activate every time yousweat, so you can stay fresh longer. $4

Haylie:Okay,this is going to sound completely insane to you readers, but I love deodorant!I love the way it smells and makes me feel so clean! I put it on at thebeginning of the day and just before I go to bed (think about it, do you wantyour underarms to wake you up? I didn’t think so.) I love Degree because itworks! I have yet to meet someone who hasn’t had a great thing to say aboutDegree. It leaves you feeling fresh and ready to go! My favorite is the Degree Natureffects Deodorant inHoneysuckle and Tea Tree Oil because it smells the best! $4

Shampoo & Conditioner

Sarah: As ahairdresser, hair care is something I definitely do not skimp on. Using qualityhair products leads to beautiful and healthy hair. TIGI Colour Goddess Shampoo and Conditioner is great for coloredhair because not only is it sulfate free so it won’t strip your color out, butit actually helps protect your color from fading, so it can look as fresh asthe day you got it done at the salon. The shampoo is a moisturizing shampoo tobattle dryness and breakage, and the conditioner is great for girls who don’twash their hair every day like me, since it’s very intense, like a treatment.Shampoo $13.50 Conditioner $18.50

Grace: Dove Damage Therapy Intense Repair. Ilove this shampoo/conditioner because it really helps prevent split-ends! $4per bottle.

Erin: Suave Naturals Daily Clarifying Shampoo keeps myhair health and less oily! $2

I recently started using SuaveProfessionals Moisturizing Almond + Shea Butter conditioner and I love howit leaves my hair smooth and untangled! It smells great too! $3

Haylie: Most ofyou might know that I absolutely LOVE the smell of coconut, well, the Aussie Three Minute Miracle deepconditioner smells like wonderful coconut and it leaves your hair feeling soincredibly soft and silky smooth. I use it about three times a week because myhair is majorly dry and it works miracles, hence the name. $3

Styling Product

Sarah: I use Your Highness by TIGI Thickening Gel Crème on almost every one of myclients! It’s great to add a bit of thickness and volume, and it addssmoothness and shine and offers UV filters to protect colored hair from fading.$17

Grace: Fructis Garnier Leave-In Conditionerkeeps the ends of my hair split-end free and moisturized! $5

Erin: When Iscrunch my hair or let it dry overnight, TRESemmeFlawless Curls Mousse seems to work well. It keeps my hair from lookingfrizzy without making it look less natural. I can’t find this exact product instores anymore but I’m sure they sell a similar product. $5

Haylie: I have HORRIBLY dry hair on my bottomlayer because of constantly coloring it over the summer. (I cannot begin totell you how many different times I colored it and how I did it completely wrong!)Because of that, I had to cut my hair, BIG TIME. It was a very sad day. I nowhave some major split ends. I really don’t want to cut my hair again (andcannot afford it right now) so I use NexxusPro-Mend Split End Binding Targeting Leave-in Treatment Cream to keep mybottom layer from looking completely fried and believe it or not, it works! Youcannot tell that I have split ends and it is actually helping it. I highlyrecommend this to the color junkies like me! $14

Finishing Product

Sarah: Bed Head by TIGI Masterpiece Hairsprayis the best! This is my “tried and true” hairspray! It offers a strong enough holdto keep a bride’s hair in an updo the entire day, but flexible enough to beworkable with every day styles such as curls, texture, or volume. It doesn’tflake like cheap hairspray when you brush through it. And it smells great,unlike most hairsprays. $19

Grace: Garnier Fructis Anti-Frizz Serumsmooths out frizz and leaves my hair shiny! $6

Erin: I don’tuse hairspray often, but White RainMaximum Hold Hairspray seems to get the job done! $2

Haylie: Florida is knownfor its sun, heat and humidity which are damaging to your hair if you don’ttake the right precautions. With the humidity, you need the right hair spray tokeep your hair from frizzing. TresemmeAll Day HumidityResistance Tres Two Spray works like no otherfrizz-freehair spray. Itkeeps your hair looking like you’ve just styled it even if you have beenoutside for awhile. Plus, it doesn’t feel like you have hair spray in yourhair! Forget the stiff as a board hair! Say hello to touchable hair with thishair spray! I absolutely love it! $3

Styling Tool

Sarah: I could notlive without my Rusk W8less 2000 WattHairdryer and my TIGI Pro PaddleBrush. I am able to style my hair perfectly using this combination, usingthe brush to get it straight with volume. The Hairdryer is super lightweightand dries hair faster than any other dryer I’ve owned, even more expensivekinds. It’s also really quiet for a hairdryer, which is nice for early morninghair styling. Dryer: $78 Brush: $18

Grace: I don't straighten my hair all thatoften but when I do, my Andis CeramicFlat Iron works great and isn't that expensive! I've had mine for about 3years. $15

Haylie: I lovethe beach wave look, but I can never find a product that would give me the nicewaves that I wanted. The Revlon JumboCeramic Waver does the job wonderfully! It is quick and easy to use and youwill definitely get your money’s worth with this styling tool! $24

Hair Accessory

Sarah: I haveshort hair, so I love dressing up my hair with a headband with a big bow or a big flower on it!

Grace: I buy Scrunci No Damage Elastics because theydon't have those annoying little metal things and they don't pull:) $3

Erin: I love headbands whether they’re bright, dark,think, skinny; they work well with every outfit.

Lip Balm

Sarah: I love my Burts Bees Replenishing Lip Balm! Ithas a yummy smell from the pomegranate oil which is antioxidant rich and addsmoisture to my lips. $3

Grace: I'mpersonally don't care for lipstick/lip-gloss. So I just wear ChapStick Original to keep my lipsmoisturized! $2

Erin: I use Nivea Lip Balm almost every day. Itmoisturizes very well, and gives a natural shine to your lips. $3

Haylie: Livingin Florida, you get chapped lips. Whether it’s from the summer heat or thewinter winds, your lips will getchapped. Chapstick Moisturizer isheaven in a tube! It moisturizes your lips so well! If you have badly chappedlips, applying this Chapstick throughout the day and the next day they willfeel so smooth and so much better! I should know. I did that the first week ofDecember. After your lips are healed, apply it at least three times a day tokeep them like that! Chapstick Moisturizer has 15SPF, so it is great for anyweather! A pack of three of these costs $5 and is a great thing to always haveon hand!

Lip Gloss

Sarah: I’maddicted to lip gloss! I have tried so many different kinds, but my favorite by faris Urban Decay Lip Junkie Lip Gloss.It has great pigment so it gives me color, and is super glossy without beinggoopy or sticky. It’s supposed to be plumping, but it doesn’t numb or burn likemost; it’s cooling and minty! $19

Erin: I love Bath & Body Works Color Lip Gloss!They come in so many great flavors and scents! $7

Haylie: LipGloss, it can add a dramatic effect to your makeup or give it a simple shine. Covergirl Queen Collection Lip Gloss cando both, depending on what color you get! I have 2 different colors of this, abright red and a soft pink. I use the red ONLY when I want to be dramatic (notall the often) and I use the soft pink when I want to add a bit of color andshine to my look. It goes on great and it moisturizes your lips which is alwaysa plus! $5

Lip Color

Sarah: I like moreof a sheer color on my lips, and I like BurtsBees Lip Shimmer for the fact it moisturizes and protects my lips while I’mwearing it along with a wash of color and shimmer. Plus it has a minty feeling and scentto it like their original Lip Balm! $5

Haylie: I’m not much of a lipstick girl, but when I get in the mood togirl-it-up more than normal, I wear Ulta LipStick in Cappuccino (I know, coffeeis an obsession of mine). It’s a light brown and it goes on so smooth and lastsa long time! $8

Toothpaste

Sarah: Crest 3D White Vivid Toothpaste isgreat because it’s different than most “whitening” toothpastes. It gentlyexfoliates your teeth to remove surface stains and plaque and get them lookingwhiter! $4

Grace: I like Colgate Toothpaste because it’s cheapand it gets the job done! It makes my mouth feel fresh! $2

Erin: I havenoticed a subtle whitening in my teeth since I’ve started using Crest Extra Whitening Toothpaste! $3

Haylie: For me,toothpaste has always been toothpaste. I had never noticed the differencebetween them, but when my mom bought the Crest3-D White Vivid Toothpaste, I noticed a majordifference! My teeth felt so much cleaner than they normally did and they feltthat way for most of the day! Even after drinking a few cups of coffee my teethstill felt as though I had just brushed them. They also make your teeth whiter!Many types of toothpaste say they are whitening toothpaste, but they arenothing like this! $4

Best of Beauty Week 2: Eyes

Eyeshadow

Sarah: The colors inthe Urban DecayRoller Girl Palette all are nicely pigmented and make for a great natural eye and are verysmooth and subtly shimmery, which I love. With the neutrals, it also includes ahot pink shadow for a pop of color when you’re feeling fun! $18

Grace: Except formascara, I hardly ever wear eye makeup. But when I do, I wear a bit of browneyeshadow and I like Covergirl EyeEnhancers! $6

Erin: I lovethe set of colors in Maybelline New YorkImpeccable Greys. Works great for a smokey eye style, and I like to use thedarker grey almost as an eyeliner. $6

Haylie: I enjoyexperimenting with eye shadows (normally on my friends!) but eye shadows can bevery expensive. E.L.F. EssentialBrightening Eye Color gives you ahuge variety of colors! Each set comes with four different colors, normally 2light and 2 dark. My two favorites for me are Butternut (deep browns and lightoranges) and Ivy (light green, dark green, brown and a powdery color) because Ilike earthy tones on myself and browns and greens bring out the green in myhazel eyes! $1

Eyeliner

Sarah: The Urban Decay 27/4 Glide On Eye Pencil isthe best eyeliner I’ve ever tried! I own them in the colors Whiskey, a deepbrown, and Lust, a rich purple. They are SO smooth and just melt into yourskin, so there is no dragging or pulling. $18

Grace: I think thebrown Jane Eyeliner Pencil looksgreat! It enhances your eyes but still look natural. $5

Haylie: I like E.L.F. Essentials Liquid Eyeliner because it goes on easily and if you mess up, it can be washed away no problem. I always use the brown shadeof this because it gives a less-harsh look than black does. The liner comes inmany shades, black, brown, silver, gold and glitter (which isAWESOME!) $1

Mascara

Sarah: OrganicWear 100% Natural Origin Mascarahas been my favorite for a long time. You can find it at most drug stores andit has a great brush, which in my opinion is one of the most important thingsabout mascara. Plus it’s made with natural ingredients, so I don’t have toworry about it eating away at my naturally long lashes. $10

Grace: CoverGirl LashBlast Length Mascaramakes your eyelashes look super long! It's my favorite mascara so far. $8

Erin: NYC Instant Lash is aboutthe cheapest mascara you can buy, but it works great with me. I use anothercheap brown mascara and then brush a small amount of black NYC mascara over itso it isn’t terribly dark or clumpy. $1

Haylie: I lovemy eyes, especially when my mascara goes on right and there are only twodifferent ways I can achieve that. One would be to have my friend Danielle domy mascara, but I only get that when she stays over. The other is by using Rimmel London Lash Maxxx Mascara. Ithas a thin comb that is used to comb the mascara on. It makes my lashes looklong and fairy-like! $6-$7

Cleanser

Sarah: Arbonne FC5 Purifying Cleanser + Toneris great for oily/combination skin like mine. It smells yummy and fruity and ispH balanced so it’s a cleanser and toner all in one. $25

Grace: True Elements Foaming Face Wash. The NikkenTrue Elements line is super pricey but SO amazing! It's the only thing thatkeeps my skin clean, moisturized, and oil free! I buy drugstore makeup and hairproducts, but this skincare line is something that I find is worth the price! $36

Erin: Clean & Clear Foaming Facial Cleanser is reallyeasy and affordable. Its keeps my face pretty clear and all I have to do iswash with it the shower! $4

Haylie: Let’s face it ladies, we all get stressed outfrom time to time. Whether it’s a big test coming up, a family reunion you arenot looking forward to or my personal favorite (insert sarcasm) an unexpected‘visitor’ who brings unwanted ‘gifts’. All of these lead to stress and acnebreakouts. Neutrogena Oil-Free AcneStress Control Power Gel Cleanser is a miracle worker for the stressed outteenager (or anyone for that matter). It goes deep into the pores and gets ridof all your ‘stress marks’! Hehe! $6

Moisturizer

Sarah: Arbonne FC5 Oil Absorbing Day Lotion isawesome! A lot of times when products say they are “oil absorbing”, have adrying effect. This does not. It keeps my face moisturized all day and filtersUV rays to protect my face all while doing its job, absorbing excess oil.$39.50

Grace: True Elements Daily Perfecting Cream$44

Erin: Velocityis a skin care line from Mary Kay made especially for teens. Velocity Lightweight Moisturizer leavesmy skin healthy and clear and gives it a beautiful glow. Velocity also sells agreat cleanser. $12

Foundation

Sarah: Clinique Acne Solutions Liquid Makeupis great! It contains Salicylic Acid so it treats my skin while I’m wearing it.It’s a smooth formula and makes my skin tone look very even and natural. Itfeels so light on my skin I forget I’m wearing makeup when I have it on! $24.50

Grace: I love Covergirl NatureLuxe Silk Foundationbecause it feels really smooth and hydrating for wintertime but also feels niceand thin like lotion! $10 (I get it much cheaper with sales and coupons!)

Erin: I don’tlike wearing heavy foundation, so MaryKay Mineral Powder Foundation is great! It evens my skin tone and gives me just the little bitof coverage that I want. $18

Haylie: You my have seen the commercials for Covergirl NatureLuke Silk Foundation withTaylor Swift jumping around trying to act as ‘light as a ballerina’. Well, thatis a pretty good picture of this foundation. It really is light! I could hardlytell I had any foundation on! It covers so well and you use about half of whatyou normally use! (Which is a good things too because the tubes of it arerather small). My bottle lasted through the entire summer! $10

Concealer

Sarah: I havegone through so many Arbonne Crème Concealers over the years! I have lovedthem for a long time; they are very creamy and cover well. A lot of otherconcealers I’ve tried are too liquidy or too cakey or don’t have enoughcoverage. The consistency of this one is just right! $22

Grace: Covergirl Fresh Complexion Concealer.I love this stuff! It works really well to cover problem areas and the bottlelasts forever! $8

Blush/Bronzer

Sarah: Stila Convertible Color in Rose is theperfect winter flushed cheek color, but I love it just as much for the summer.It’s very flattering on me, the color my cheeks would naturally flush to, and Ilove that’s it’s a cream blush so it blends out well and stays put. Best ofall, it’s multi-functioning, you can use it for cheek color or lip color! $25

Grace: I only usemy bareMinerals Blush in the winterwhen my skin needs a little color. I'm not too picky and would usually just usedrugstore brand but my mom gave me this blush because she wasn't using it. $19

Erin: Jane Shimmering Blush is greatat giving my cheeks a little color and sparkle! Works great on top of my powderfoundation. $7

Haylie: Howwould you like to look sun-kissed year round?! I do! E.L.F. Healthy Glow Bronzer Powder is fine and goes on light and itgives you that sun-kissed look! If you have never tried a bronzer before, Isuggest you try this one and try it in the sun-kissed shade like me! I reallyenjoy it and I think you would too! $1

Other

Sarah: Arbonne FC5 Mattifying Powder is alifesaver for oily skin! I apply it to my t-zone under my foundation and itabsorbs excess oil all day. You can also use it for blotting on top offoundation. The pressed powder is tinted green so it cancels out any redness aswell. $25

Erin: This mightnot be the first acne treating crème that you think of, but Triple Antibiotic Ointment works greatat reducing zits and problem areas on your face. Apply at night and lookforward to improvements in the morning! $3

Haylie: How many times have you bought a facebrush and hated it because it was too rough on your face? I lost count. The E.L.F. Kabuki Face Brush is so soft andit applies your powder or bronzer smoothly across your face without irritatingit (or you). The Kabuki (isn’t that fun to say?!) cost $5 and is SO worth it!

Clean Out Your Closet for Something Bigger and Better Than Yourself

“Ugh! I have nothing to wear!” This has been said multiple times by yours truly when I open my closet doors and stare into my I-have-a-shopping-addiction closet. Now, if my closet screams that I have a shopping addiction, why would I say that I have nothing to wear? It’s not that I don’t have anything to wear; I just don’t see what I want to wear. I tend to dress with my mood.

In November, I had the chance to volunteer at a local food pantry with my youth group. When I arrived, Twila, the wonderful lady in charge, asked us to split up and work with some of the more experienced workers. She asked if anyone wanted to help hand out bags so people could put their clothes in. Of course, I volunteered. For the two hours the food pantry was open, I, along with Kailee and Madison, two girls who I had just met, organized all of the clothes that had been donated and helped the ladies find what they were looking for.

Many ladies had no idea what size they were. So many ladies asked us if we had any coats or jackets because the cooler weather is to roll in any day now, and we had to tell most of them no. There were teenaged girls in this group too. Teenaged girls just like you and me.

When the crowd died down, I looked down at what I was wearing; my American Eagle jeans, a nice shirt and even nicer cowboy boots that I had been wanting for almost a year. I then looked at what they were wearing; dirty old t-shirts that needed to be cleaned and jeans that were two inches too short. These ladies literally had nothing to wear and I was complaining about the same thing, but I had too many things to wear.

The next Saturday, I opened my closet door and began to get rid of everything I knew I would not wear or no longer fit. I told myself that I would give away anything that I knew I did not need or want because I knew that there was someone in my own town that needed it.

I want to share some verses with you lovely ladies and I hope that you take it to heart.

If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother: But thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth. Deuteronomy 15:7-8

These verses are saying that we are to give to the poor. Not just people out the country who are hungry and in need, but the ones in our own city! We are to meet their needs!

Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine own hand to do it. Say not unto thy neighbor, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee. Proverbs 3:27-28

These verses state that we to give to the needy when we can, not when we want too. If you are like me and have more clothes than you need and you have people in your town that need them, don’t ignore the need! If you can meet the need, then meet the need! Let God use you for something greater than yourself.

For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward. Mark 9:41

This verse is telling us that, if we give now, we will be rewarded later. Now, I am not telling you this so that you will give just to receive. We are to give because God tells us to give. I am stating this verse for encouragement. If we give in the name of the Lord, we will be rewarded by Him.

I do believe I have saved the most appropriate verse for last. The moment I read it I knew I had to save it for now.

He answereth and saith unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath meat, let him do likewise. Luke 3:11

Did you catch that, ladies? He said that the person who has two coats to give to someone who has none. Wow! To think that I was just talking about all those ladies who kept asking for coats! This verse gives me a boost of encouragement!

I asked Sarah if I could do a post on giving clothes because it has been laid on my heart and I wanted to share it with everyone I could, but I wasn’t going to just tell you all about these people and leave you with no way of knowing how to help! So, I have designed a master plan on how to clean out your closet to help you clean out your closet (which is great for everyone to do at least twice a year) and donate as much as possible to the needy in your community.

Steps to Cleaning Out Your Closet

Prep:

1) Set aside one day to clean out your closet. Let nothing distract you!

2) Take everything out of your closet so that you won’t try to give up half way through.

3) Put in an upbeat CD or a movie to keep you motivated! A good motivational movie for this is Confessions of a Shopaholic! Just don’t do what she did and put everything in Space Bags. If you do, I will find you J

Invasion #1:

Now make 3 piles: yes, no and maybe. Here are the items that should go in each pile…

Yes:

~flatters your body

~ is your current style

~what you wear a lot

~ fits properly

No:

~does nothing for your body

~ isn’t your current style

~ hardly ever wear

~ too big or too small

Maybe:

~Whatever you are not sure of (we will touch more on it later)

Note:

When you are making your piles, use your flash judgment. When you pull an item from your pile say yes, no or maybe, whichever pops into your head first. If you go ‘eeehhh’ then quickly ask yourself when was the last time you wore it. If you can’t remember, donate it.

Put your no pile out of sight so that you are not tempted to grab something and put it back in your closet.

Invasion #2:

Once you have gone through your closet once, go through your yes and maybe pile again! This time when you go through them, ask yourself these questions…

1) Does this flatter my body?

2) Did I feel beautiful the last time I wore it?

3) Can I remember the last time I wore it?

4) Does this go with my current style?

5) Did I know this item was still in my closet?

If you answered no to any of these, put it in the no pile!

It might be best to try on all of your yes and maybe piles to see if they fit properly and flatter you.

A Few Exceptions:

~I keep saying that if you haven’t worn it in awhile to donate it, but it is okay to keep seasonal clothes as long as you know you are going to wear them when the appropriate season rolls in. For example, I have not worn my brown sweater in ten months, but I know that I will wear it when the weather gets cooler, so it is still in my closet.

~ It is also okay to keep one pair of grungy (or as I like to call them ‘get-dirty’) jeans for when you are going to get dirty or sweaty.

Last Minute Tips:

~Do not fall for the ‘I might need it later’ bit because you will most likely not need it later.

~If you are still unsure about a maybe, ask your mom, friend or sibling. If you are unsure of a maybe because of modesty, ask you dad or grandpa or just go ahead and donate it. It’s better safe than sorry.

~ Remember the people out there who have nothing. While I was cleaning my closet, I had them on my mind. I thought of how much they needed and how much I had. It made my closet cleaning experience much more enjoyable and successful! I encourage each one of you to go and volunteer at a homeless shelter or somewhere where you can see people who have next to nothing. This will help you get a better understanding.

~Print out this article and refer to it while you are cleaning out your closet! That’s why it’s here!

The Throwaways:

There are only two things in your closet that should be thrown away.

1) Anything with missing elastic or is loosing it’s elastic

2) Anything with major non-fixable rips (unless your holy jeans are your get-dirty jeans!)

Follow all of these steps with not just your clothes, but your pajamas, shoes, accessories, anything and everything you can wear! (I do not suggest you donate your undergarments though. They should be thrown away too… that’s just gross!) If you follow these steps and remember the verses above, I am sure that your closet will look better and you will feel better knowing that you had helped someone in need. I’m sure they will feel better too, especially if you have impeccable taste J

Since it's almost Christmas (Yay!!!), I thought maybe we could take some time from our usual topics to remember the "reason for the season."

I heard something the other day that really made me think about my attitude towards Christmas. When we forget to worship Jesus during Christmas, it's like going to a birthday party and bringing everyone except for the birthday person a present. It's Christ's birthday that we're celebrating. Shouldn't our gift to Him be the most important thing on the list? It's so easy to get caught up in the craziness of the season though. There are parties to go to, cookies to bake, presents to buy- It's easy to forget the whole reason we're celebrating. This funny video explains it pretty well.

I've constantly had to remind myself this Christmas season that it's not about me. It's not about getting everyone the perfect gift, and even harder, is it's not about getting everything on my wish list! Whether I get the super cute jacket or fancy curling iron I want won't matter twenty years from now, and more importantly it definitely won't matter in eternity.

Matthew 6:19-20 says:

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

Instead of a time to be greedy and materialistic, Christmas should be a time of thanks. Instead of thinking about the next big thing that we want, we should praise God for what He has already given us. We have food to eat, a roof over our heads, people who love us, and most of all we have a personal Savior if we have a relationship with Christ, who came to earth as a little baby to save us!

I'm going to challenge you (As well as myself!) to take time these next couple weeks to turn down the Christmas carols, put your shopping bags down, and remember the reason we celebrate. Remember the King who came and died so we could have eternal freedom! Talk to Him, listen to His words. Christmas is on a Sunday this year. I cannot think of a better way to begin Jesus' birthday than worshiping Him in His house! Whatever we do, let's remember the reason for the season, the hope that came to earth that night in Bethlehem. This Christmas, let's not forget the Birthday Boy!

Keeping Hair and Skin Healthy during the Winter

Since the long, hazy days of summer with sun-kissed glows and wavy tousled beach hair are behind us, it's time for an updated routine to keep our skin and hair moisturized and healthy during the winter months!

Just because the brisk air sucks the moisture and summer glow from your skin, doesn't mean you can't still achieve healthy radiant skin.

Skin:

1. For skin to look healthy and moisturized, you must exfoliate it! Removing dead skin cells helps your skin appear vibrant and healthy. I make my own exfoliating scrub (from thebeautydepartment.com.)

1/2 cup brown sugar
2 Tablespoons of olive oil
A few drops of water

Mix all these ingredients together and keep them in a container. I use this in the shower about twice a week. It's amazing! The sugar exfoliates and the olive oil moisturizes and makes my skin glow!

2. After exfoliating your skin, follow with a good moisturizer. I use True Elements Daily Perfecting Cream. It's quite pricey, but any moisturizer that works and doesn't irritate your skin will work:) Moisturizer is important if you're going to wear makeup because it makes it apply smoother.

3. Makeup is the next part! If you don't wear makeup, that's perfectly fine. My face doesn't tan like the my arms and legs do, so I like to brush on a bit of bronzer on my face to make my skin glow and look healthier. Make sure it looks natural though! The you-look-like-you-have-a-Barbie-spray-tan-look is not attractive:) I use Bare Minerals bronzer but whatever you find works for you is fine!:)

Hair:

1. Get your hair trimmed! I'm trying to grow my hair out so I was desperately holding onto my dry, split ends, trying to make every inch count. Well it doesn't look good anyway! Get your dry split ends cut off, healthy hair looks much better!:)

2. Once your hair is trimmed, moisturize it! I put coconut oil in my hair every other day (you may not need is so often though.)

First, put the container of coconut oil in a sink full of hot water to bring the solid oil to liquid form. Then put it in your hands and rub it on the ends of your hair (not the scalp, it makes your hair too oily!)
Once your hair has soked up a generous amount of coconut oil, wrap your hair in a towel and go find something to do for 1/2 hour.
Then take a shower and wash the coconut oil out. Make sure you wash it out all the way, or your hair will appear oily.
Also, make sure you use a good conditioner and leave-in conditioner (it locks in moisture!). After a couple weeks of using the coconut oil, I noticed my hair was much softer and stronger!

Biore Complexion Clearing Blemish Fighting Ice Cleanser

First things first. To start your beauty routine, you firstneed to cleanse your face. If you have acne like me, you’ve probably tried tonsof products out there. I’ve even tried expensive products, but this by far ismy favorite. It works quickly and cleanses deeply. It finishes by giving yourface a cooling, minty feeling. I love it! Even if it didn’t work, I would stilllove the cooling feeling. =D

I use this in the morning and follow with a witch hazeltoner and a light oil-free moisturizer, then use a gentle scrub at night toexfoliate dead cells for deeper pore cleansing. Using a scrub will keep yourpores clear and prevent acne, but using a scrub more than once a day may be tooharsh for your skin and cause redness.

Dove Go Fresh Body Wash

I use this for the rest of my body, and I love it so much!It’s super moisturizing and makes my skin really soft and lightly scented. Itlasts a really long time which is a bonus for you barganistas! It seems reallyconcentrated because a small amount lathers well on wet skin. My favorite isPomegranate and Lemon Verbena, but the other two smell delicious as well! Also,their Go Fresh deodorant is probably the best I ever used.

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup

This foundation is said to be comparable to the high endNARS Sheer Glow Foundation! The price is 49 cents over the limit, but I promiseit’s worth it! It really is one of the best drug store foundations. It has avery natural, dewy look, and says “the exclusiveblend plus SPF 20 work together to visibly improve skin's luminosity, tone, andtexture”. There is a wide color range to choose from to find your perfectmatch. The formula is lightweight and silky, but still has nice coverage.

Rimmel Lasting Finish Blush and Natural Bronzer

Rimmel is a great drug store brand, I use their lip linersin my makeup kit for work. These are only around $4-$5 and are nicelypigmented, but not too dark, which dark is something you don’t want in yourblush and especially bronzer. The bronzer has a small amount of shimmer, butnot too much and it’s not like the chunky glitter you’ll often find in drugstore bronzers.

NYX HD Eyeshadow Base

This eyeshadow primer is said to be comparable to UrbanDecay’s Primer Potion, which is the bestselling primer out there! But insteadof $18-19, it’s only $7! I love many NYX products, they are one of the betterbrands that sell for less. I’m not sure how many drugstores they sell in (Iknow they are in some but they’re not in my local stores), but you can easilyfind them online or at ULTA.

L'Oreal HiP High Intensity Pigments Shadow Duos

This eyeshadow is very pigmented for a drug store brand.Typically, I stay away from drug store eyeshadow because with most of thecheaper kinds, you’re actually paying morefor less in the end because they’re a lot less pigmented than the expensivebrands. While you are paying $8 for 2 colors, this duo is comparable to brandsthat you’d pay around $20 for 2 colors.

Revlon Colorstay Liquid Eyeliner

This is good stuff! As good as any expensive liner I’vetried. I love that it has a felt tip instead of brush because it’s easier toget a precise line without fraying.

If you like pencil or crayon liners, try L'Oreal Paris HiP Studio Secrets Professional Chrome Eyeliner.I’ve heard they’re comparable to the Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliner, which in myopinion, is the best eyeliner on the market.

Organic Wear 100% Natural Origin Mascara

This is my favorite mascara ever! It’s in an adorablepackage and has an awesome brush that separates each lash for longer, darker,thicker, and overall more defined lashes. It leaves your lashes soft andflexible unlike the stiff feeling of most other mascaras. And since it is naturaland not waterproof, it’s better and more moisturizing for my eyelashes; itdoesn’t dry them out and eat away at them and is easy to remove with soap andwater. The best thing you can do to get lush, thick, long lashes is to takegood care of your natural lashes underneath the mascara.

Burt’s Bees Lip Shimmer

If you liked the original Burt’s Bees Lip Balm, you’ll lovethe Lip Shimmer! It’s just like the balm but adds some color to your lips. Myfavorite shades are Watermelon and Rhubarb. Champagne would be perfect forthose popular pinky nude lips.

If you’re more of a lip gloss girl, try Burt’s Bees Super Glossy Natural Lip Shine. I love this. Itmoisturizes and has a delicious fruity scent to it.

Crest 3D White Vivid Radiant Mint Toothpaste

What’s better to complete your makeup routine than with awhite smile? A couple months ago, I’d been noticing my teeth have been lookingdull in pictures. I heard good things about this toothpaste, so I decided togive it a try. Since I’ve been using it, people have noticed my whiter smile!

They are pretty big and I don’tneed to use the whole cloth, so I always tear them in half (or in thirds!).That way they last me twice as long!

And the total if you would buy one each of the products Imentioned would take us to about $112 (which is kind of ironic since everythingwas under $12). Not bad for everything you need for your beauty routine, huh?

I was curious how much it might cost buying high endproducts that work just as well as these and the total was $415! WOW! Talkabout saving money! You just saved over $300! ;D

Also, I am still looking for a good drug store concealer.I’ve tried Physician’s Formula, which is chunky and horrible (I bought itbecause I liked that it came with green concealer to cover up redness), andNeutrogena’s Skin Clearing one, which is okay. It works to clear blemishesdoesn’t conceal well because it’s too liquidy, not creamy enough. I’ve heardthe Revlon Photo Ready concealer is good, has anyone tried that or any otherconcealer you recommend?

Suave Dry Shampoo Vs Tresemme Dry Shampoo

How many of you wash your hair everyday? I do, because my hair gets so oily at the roots. Did you know that the oil in your hair keeps it healthy? One way to keep you hair healthy is by not washing your hair everyday and taking advantage of those natural oils, but how can you get rid of your oily scalp without having to wash your hair?

Dry shampoo keeps the natural oils in your hair, but keeps your hair looking freshly washed and oil-free. I recently discovered that both Suave and Tresemme make a dry shampoo. I tried both of them and I would like to share my input on both.

Suave Dry Shampoo Spray: This dry shampoo is quick and easy to use. You simply shake the bottle well, spray it about 12 inches from your scalp and massage it in. That’s it! Easy, right? It will still appear a little oily after you apply it, but that will go away after a few minutes.

I loved Suave’s Dry Shampoo Spray because of how easy it was to use. It's three simple steps; shake, spray, massage. There is nothing to it, plus it smells wonderful! It reminds me of grapefruit.

Suave’s Dry Shampoo Spray is also very affordable! I did not expect a cheap, dry shampoo to work as well as it did! It works just like a product that salons would use and that is saying something.

Tresemme Fresh Start Voluming Dry Shampoo: Normally, I love Tresemme's products, but this product got two thumbs down from me. First, It takes longer to use than the the Suave Dry Shampoo Spray. You have to shake the can 'vigorously', spray and wait 2 minutes before you can even work in the dry shampoo.

Second,though the product works, it leaves your hair feeling dry and grimy (like a poorly washed plate of mashed potatoes. I know this because our dishwasher doesn't like to complete it's cycle.) Every time I went to touch my hair, I would pull back my hand and frown because it felt so bad!

So, if you decide to use a dry shampoo (which I suggest!), I would use Suave's Dry Shampoo Spray!!

I'm Thankful For...

Thanksgiving is almost here! As I'm thinking about things in my life that I'm thankful for, I though it would be fun to talk about fashion staples I'm thankful for! There are things that get me through a bad hair day, keep me modest, or just add a touch to my look that I take advantage of! It might seem cliche but here we go... :)

1. The Bobby Pin!
I don't know where my hair would be without bobby pins. I keep them in my purse, in my
pocket, I find them in random shoes :), I always have one on me! You can use bobby pins in so many ways. Use them to pull back your bangs, to secure a poof, to create a half-up style, to pin back loose hair and so much more! Click here for more ways to use the bobby pin!

2. Tank tops!
In a world of plunging necklines and sheer tops, tank tops and camis are life savers! Layer them to create a modest look or even to add a pop of color. My favorites are the camis with the built in bras (That you can totally cut out!). They seem tighter to me so they won't sag or gape.

3. Leggings!
Also for the sake of modesty I'm thankful for leggings! When a skirt is just an inch or two too short add leggings for more coverage. Leggings, cotton and nylon, can make a look more appropriate and help you feel more comfortable and covered. Don't tell, but I like wearing leggings when I don't want to shave that day! :) Another great use of leggings is for warmth! Cotton leggings work great on cold days, and look super cute with a pair of boots!

4. Earrings!I don't wear a lot of jewelry, but I do like having a simple set of earrings in. I have double lobe piercings and like to wear silver studs with little hoops, but all girls have their own favorites. Pick earrings that match your style, and add the subtle or dramatic touch that you want.

5. Cover-up!

Cover-up is possibly the best product ever invented. Don't know what I would do without it! Whether its a little zit or a huge pimple, I can disguise it with just a little dab! I am definitely not a makeup expert, but I feel like my little walmart cover-up does the job! If you want tips from someone who knows their make-up a lot better than me, click here.

5 Acne Remedies!

Over the years I've suffered from mild acne...which I happen to hate! Who doesn't?
I know there have already been a couple posts on acne remedies, but I would like to share the ones that have worked for me!:)
These are all natural, home remedies that can be made with products you probably already have around the house. So, they are healthier for you and if they don't work, you haven't wasted a ridiculous amount of money.

1. Lemon Juice
Simply squeeze the juice of the lemon and keep in a container in the refrigerator. I usually apply it all over my face with a tissue (or cotton ball) each night. It may sting a little, but the results are worth it. I've been doing this for about a week and my blotchy spots and acne scars are definitely fading away. My skin tone has evened out and I have had very few new breakouts. I would suggest only putting this on at night because it makes your skin sensitive to the sun and too much lemon juice is dehydrating to your skin.2. Water!
Drinking enough water definitely improves your skin! I started drinking more water (at least eight glasses of 8oz water per day) and I have noticed an improvement in my skin!

3. Don't Touch!
I've always read that it's unhealthy to touch your face but I never believed it was so true! Touching your face spreads bacteria, creating more blemishes. When I am diligent in not touching my face, there is an obvious improvement in my skin!

4. Pore Strips
They clean your pores, removing black heads and white heads. I use pore strips about once or twice a week and then apply an acne medication right afterwords because my pores are clean and the medication will be more effective (I use either toner or lemon juice). Over the course of a couple weeks, your pores will also appear smaller!

5. Honey Mask
Apply this to an area that's scarred from past acne, or currently breaking out. Mix equal amounts (depending on how much you need) of honey, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Honey is hydrating and soothing and cinnamon and nutmeg heal acne and smooth out skin. Apple once or twice and week and leave on for about 15 minutes.I hope these work for you! Have a great day!

Hairstyles!

Hey girls! If you are anything like me, you are always looking for new ideas for your hair. I'm going to try to help you out a little with some ideas that I've learned! If you click the underlined style names, they will take you to a tutorial on YouTube! Sorry that most of the pictures are awkward ones of me! Haha

You've seen it, braided bangs! I love this look, and it keeps my bangs out of my eyes! The style is a simple french braid that starts from your natural part and goes across your head ending an inch or so above your ear. In my braid I like to only add strands from one side of the braid. You can secure the look with a bobby pin or cute clip.
Curls! You can never go wrong with curls. There are so many ways to get this style. I like using my cheap half inch iron from Walmart. I don't like to use the clamp, I take a section of hair at a time and wrap it around the rod. I'm hoping to get a clamp-less iron or wand soon to make this process a little simpler!
Knot it! If you go searching on YouTube, there are a ton of tutorials that will show you ways to spice up a simple bun, braid, or ponytails with knots! Some of them look super complicated, so I stick with a simple twist that my mom probably did to my hair when I was 5! I tie my hair in a ponytail, loosen it a little, and then divide the hair just above the hair-tie with my fingers. Then I reach through the space I created with my fingers and pull the ponytail through it. I usually braid the rest of the ponytail.
Fishtail braid! This braid is becoming so popular! It looks complicated but it's pretty easy once you've practiced a little. I like to wear a fishtail on the side. The only drawback to this style is it can be kind of itchy on your neck!

Authentic Beauty

Recently God has been teaching something important. To live for eternity. When you look at something in the light of eternity, your perspective changes.

It reminds me of the lyrics of Turn your Eyes upon Jesus which go "And the things of this world will grow strangly dim in the light of His glory and grace..."

That is so true! When I sing those words, suddenly the choice between the blue or the purple nail polish seems frivolous. Deciding which coffee flavor at Starbucks I'm going to buy isn't so important.

Ok, sorry for the rambling:) My point is, God has been showing me that I have been overly concerned with outward appearances. I was spending so much time making sure my skin was perfect or that I was always wearing a new stylish outfit. I was running after the kind of perfection the world screams as important. Well you know? Those things aren't what really matter.

God is teaching me something else: I'm not perfect (wow, big shock there, right?;) But I don't have to be perfect! My skin (one of my biggest insecurities) is a little blotchy and has a few acne scars - but that's ok! Really it is! Every strand of my hair won't always be perfectly in place (a.k.a I might have a bad hair day!) - that's ok! I'm not the 2011 airbrushed Covergirl model - and that's ok, I don't have to be! Realizing that I don't have to be flawlessly beautiful lifts such a huge weight off my shoulders!

I'm not saying wearing make-up or wanting to wear stylish clothes is wrong! I love those things:) But if that's what you're chasing after to find your self worth, you'll be left with an empty, unfulfilled heart and even more insecurity.

In the end, it's what's in your heart that makes you truly beautiful.

I have this friend (we'll call her Rebecca). Rebecca is one of the most beautiful girls I know. And it's her inner beauty, not her Covergirl bronzer that makes her glow from within! She's funny, compassionate, and possesses the radiant love of Christ. Although she is physically pretty as well, it's her inner beauty that makes her truly beautiful. I know many woman like that (men as well) who the world may not consider attractive, but their love for Christ makes them inwardly and outwardly beautiful.

That is the beauty I want. I would much rather have inner authentic beauty that represents and draws others to Christ. The beauty that lasts for eternity.

I have to admit, I haven’t been really excited about thefall 2011 trends as I usually am about fall trends. There was nothing reallynew and innovative to me. New Do for a New School Year!

By now, most of you have already started school, BUT it is never to late to get a new hair do! Just before school started, I had my BFF's Mom cut my hair! (Always a plus when your BFF's mom is a hairstylist.. can someone say free haircut?) Evidently, my split ends were so bad that she had to take off FOUR INCHES! Here is the end result!

Sadly, these are the best pictures I have. They were taken just before school started. Four inches off and layers galore! I absolutely love it! It's a new me, but still...me! I also took the brown I had underneath my blonde out and exchanged it for a light red (I was wanting a deep, auburn red, but I grabbed the wrong box!) It's a fresh, new look for my senior year!

Long Layers with Bangs~ For those of you who have long hair, but are afraid to do a dramatic change to your hair, I suggest doing nice, long layers, BUT I would take a small risk, and cut some bangs. The great thing about bangs is, if you don't like them, you won't have to wait long for them to be gone :) I love Reese's hair in this picture! (Note: It WAS the way I was wanting my hair, but I let my split ends go on and on, so if you want to grow your hair out, keep it maintained or else your dreams will die...like mine did.)

Short Hair with Short Layers~ This is an awesome haircut! I have always loved how Kimberly Caldwell has done her hair! It's always edgy (which I will show you later in this post) and super cool! Here, Kimberly has her hair cut just above her shoulders and has a few shorter layers in it. It is very awesome for those who want a shorter look.

Medium Length Hair with Longer Layers~ Rachel McAdams and my mom have only ONE thing in common, and that is, they can wear ANY hair color and/or style, and look amazing with it! Don't you just love and hate that?! This is one of my favorite looks for Rachel. Her hair is a medium length and it has about two longer layers, close in length. I like it because it is easier to style and you don't always HAVE to style it, or at least my mother doesn't!

Pixie Cut~ I have always LOVED this look on Keira! For those of you who like the short short hair, this is a GREAT cut! Short, playful and unique (which is something I have always loved!) are the three word I would use to describe this cut! You can blow dry it quickly for a shaggy sort of look; you can straigthen it for a more polished look. Anyway you do it, it'll look GREAT!

Ok girls, It's jeans season again and I am so excited! If you're shopping for some new denim, I've found some tips to help you find the style that fits you best.

Find jeans that flatter your figure!

Pear Figure: Girls with a pear shape have curvier hips with a small waist and narrower shoulders. If you have a pear shaped figure, boot cut and straight legged jeans are best. Straighter or moderate flare cuts will balance out your lower half.

Apple Figure: Apple figures have a larger top half which usually means a larger bust, broader shoulders, and a less defined waist. If this is you, try wide legged and also straight or boot cut jeans. To avoid making your legs and hips look smaller, go for a lighter wash.

Boyish/Ruler Figure: Boyish figured girls have a straight figure with very little curves. These girls can wear a straight leg and can also pull off skinny or tapered jeans. Any fading on the thighs will give the illusion of curves.

Other figure flattering tips:

If you want to make you legs and thighs look thinner, always go for a darker wash and avoid fading on the thighs.

Larger pockets, especially if they get smaller at the bottom, will make your bottom look smaller.

If you are trying to minimize your backside, stay away from crazy "bedazzled" pockets.

Boyfriend jeans are a new trend that look good on almost every figure!

Wear your Jeans Modestly:Even though most jeans don't show an inch of skin, some can still be immodest. Wearing jeans that hug your every curve can be just as tempting to a guy as a plunging neckline. So be careful when you're purchasing jeans by making sure they're not too tight on your rear or your hips. Your brothers in Christ will appreciate it! :)

Best Stores for Jeans?I am still unsure on this. I buy my jeans from a different store almost every time! When jean shopping it's smart to buy inexpensive jeans, or jeans on sale, but don't sacrifice quality. Some ideas for places to start would be American Eagle, Aeropostale, and Old Navy. There are so many places to check out, just find one that works for you. If you discover a pair of jeans you love, you might want to get another pair in a different color or cut because the perfect jeans can be hard to come by.

Back to School Beauty Trends

Now that most of you are back to school, you’re probably wanting to change up your look for a new you in a new school year. Even if you’re not in school anymore, keep an eye on these hair and makeup trends for fall 2011…

Hair

Braids are in! A cute way to wear your hair this season is to curl it and braid some of it back, or, if you feel daring, create a braided headband.

60’s big hair! This one is classy and easy to achieve. Just tease at the crown and get it really big, smooth it down, pull some hair from the sides around it and pin in the back.

Top knots and loose buns are all the rage and super easy to create. They don’t need to be perfect because they’re supposed to be messy!

For hair color, golden tones are great for fall! Blondes, you may have worked your way to becoming platinum for the summer, but now it’s time to add some honey-colored lowlights, like Brooklyn Decker. Celebrity Colorist Jason Backe says, "This Fall will be a gold rush!” Brunettes, the ombré look is hot now. It’s darker near the top and fades into a lighter color at the end. For fall, try a honey blonde on the ends. It’s really low maintenance and gives you that “lived-in” look. Perfect for girls who want to try some hair color but don’t want to keep up with coloring it often.

For cuts, if you have long hair, try adding long, whispy layers with face framing and a full fringe, like Amber Tamblyn. For short hair, try a bob with just a little bit of layering. Both cuts work well for both straight and curly hair.

Makeup

Winged eyeliner is back, a classic look with a modern twist, almost making triangles on the outer corner. Pair with a soft pink gloss to add to the modern look.

Bright red lips always make a statement wherever you go! If your skin tone is cool, go with a berry or a hot pink instead of a flaming red. Don’t forget the lip liner for stay power!

Metallic eyeshadow is a fun new trend. Silver, gold, and bronze look great on all skin tones! Try Sephora’s Baked Moonshadow Trio to achieve the super shimmery, metal look.

Nails

It's a metallic trend for nails too! Matching nails with makeup was a big trend on the runway.

Getting Ready on School Days!

My alarm clock rang at 5:30 last Thursday and I was hit with reality. My carefree days of staying up late and sleeping in are over! It's back to hectic school mornings, running like a chicken with my head cut off :) trying to look somewhat decent before I have to run out the door! I'm guessing most of you girls feel my pain! We want to look cute for school but we want our sleep too! Here are a few tips that might make our mornings a little smoother...

1. Do all you can the night before!

If you make sure the outfit you want to wear is clean, and have it already laid out, it will save a lot of time going through your closet in the morning. Try to pick something to wear that you feel confident as well as comfortable in. My favorite school outfit is my favorite pair of jeans (that I just found out Maurices doesn't sell anymore!!!), and a simple tee with canvas shoes. Besides having your outfit ready, have your bags and anything you need for school already by your door so you won't forget them.

Something else you might be able to do at night is get your shower taken care of. Personally, I like taking most of my showers in the morning. It wakes me up and helps with my crazy bed-head! But I know a lot of girls who take showers the night before and it gives them more time to sleep in!

2. Use every minute you have.

This tip has helped me cram a lot of thing into my mornings. If I have a spare minute, waiting for something, I use it to do something else. Like if I'm rinsing conditioner out of my hair, I'm also shaving my legs. (It's a difficult balancing act, but it's possible :D) When I'm waiting for my hair to dry, I read my Bible. While I'm waiting for my waffles to pop out of the toaster, I'm getting out the plate, fork, butter, and syrup! Haha you get the idea. Utilize every second you have. It adds up!

3. Remember, cute can be simple!

Spending hours on how you look in the morning isn't the most practical way to spend your time.
Simplify your hair and makeup routine!

Easy makeup for me is just cover-up if it's needed, light eyeshadow, and brown mascara. I can finish in less than 5 minutes, and it looks cute and more natural.

As far as hair goes, there are many styles to choose from that are cute and easy. Messy buns and ponytails are great! Add a headband or braid your bangs for a finishing touch.

Another hairstyle that has been a lifesaver for me is a side braid. I pull all of my hair to the side and do a simple braid starting just below my ear. I can be having a terrible hair day, or still have wet hair and the braid is a quick fix!Here's a few sites for fast hairstyles:

Fall Fashion 2011!

It's that time of year again! Some of my friends have already gone back to school :/
Still, there's something I love about the back to school time of year...new clothes? Fresh clean doodle free (at least for a while ;) notebooks and pencils? The crisp fall air? Whatever it is, I love it!:)

Here are a few of the fall 2011 trends to help with your back to school shopping!

Tunics/Off the shoulder Tops
I personally think these are adorable!! And you don't have to worry about shirts being to tight! Just make sure that if they're the off the shoulder shirt, that you don't show bra straps and wear a thick-strapped tank underneath!
Boyfriend Cardigans
I love these! They're super cute with frilly tops and skinny jeans!

Flare Jeans
I'm not sure how I feel about these haha flare jeans aren't really my favorite (I'm a skinny jeans girl!) But they'll probably grow on me ;) I'm glad skinny jeans will still be in this season! What do YOU think about the flare jean trend?

Leather Purses
I've seen long strapped leather purses everywhere! They seem to be the choice for the stylish girl!

What a Beautiful Smell!

I don't know about you, but I love to smell good! Then again, who likes to smell like sweat? My best friend, Amanda, goes to Bath and Body Works all the time, and my other best friend, Hannah, has an obsession with them. So, it was only a matter of time before I became obsessed! My obsession began at Bath and Body Works Semi-Annual major sale. So many good deals and I had my best friends mom with me, and she loves this stuff more than I!

I would like to share a bit of my obsession with you! Here are some of my favorite things at Bath and Body Works...

Country Chic is an amazing new fragrance from BBW. It smells like wildflowers and fresh air! Plus, the name itself it awesome!!!! I managed to get a free lotion in this scent and have LOVED it ever since. Plus, one of my close friends bought me the fragrance mist for my purse. It has come in quite handy!

Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin is great for anyone who loves fall. The amazing smell of pumpkin with the lingering scent of cinnamon will put anyone in the fall mood. This collection ONLY comes out during the fall, so stock up! This is also available in a body mist and shower gel.

Twilight Woods is an all-time favorite of mine. My aunt gave me a bottle of their body mist and I loved it! Twilight Woods smells like juicy berries, enchanted woods (whatever that smells like...) and apricot nectar. I have yet to meet someone who did not enjoy Twilight Woods! (In my opinion, I think the name is a big selling point...)

Sensual Amber is my signature scent! When people buy me things for Christmas or my birthday, this is what they know to buy me because I love it SO MUCH! It smells like amber with a small touch of plum :) I absolutely LOVE it, and I think you will too! (though, they could of picked a better name...)

If you are searching for a new signature scent, or you are just in the mood to smell better than normal, I suggest you head out to your closest BBW and splurge on some of these wonderful scents! Sniff! Sniff! Hurray! (Yeah, yeah I know that's for a Gain commercial, but it felt right!)

Mirror, You Don't Define Me!

What is the first thought that comes to mind when you look into a mirror?

Is it: "Wow! I am so beautiful! The world just can't handle how pretty I am! Look at me....I'm perfect!"

Ok, I am guessing that the majority of us don't think that way. (If you do, you've got some serious vanity issues to work on!) If you are anything like me, you don't always like what you see in your reflection. Maybe you think your nose is too big, your hair is too curly, or you have too many pimples. And let's not even talk about some of the things that cross our minds looking into a full-length mirror!
We have given in to believing that in order to be beautiful and accepted, we have to live up to the unreasonable standards that our culture has set. Our hair has to be a certain way, our skin needs to be perfect, and we are only beautiful if we have the figure of every fake celebrity and model on magazines and TV screens. This is a hard issue for me, and I'm sure for most of you too. We live in a world where image is everything, and it is easy for us as young women to lose confidence in the way that God has made us.

So how should we respond when our reflection doesn't please us? Where can we find the affirmation that we truly are beautiful? We know what the answer is...Our Heavenly Father! God will never judge you by the clothes that you wear, or the hairstyle that you have. His definition of beauty doesn't change with time like the world's does. Do you want to know His definition of beauty? It's YOU! The creator of the universe thinks you are drop dead gorgeous! And how could he not? He created you in His own image!

One of my favorite verses is Psalms 45:11- "The king is enthralled by your beauty; honor him, for he is your lord." How amazing is that? God is enthralled by our beauty! It becomes so easy to forget though when we are having a bad hair day, when we don't like the size on the tag of our jeans, or when our biggest crush doesn't seem to be "enthralled" by our beauty!

When you're having a day like that, when you feel ugly or begin to criticize your body, talk to God! Tell Him what you are feeling. Ask Him to make you feel like the masterpiece He created you to be, because you know He doesn't make mistakes! Another good step is to memorize verses like Psalms 45:11 and say them to yourself when you're struggling with seeing yourself as God sees you. A few other good verses are:

1 Peter 3:3-4 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.

Psalm 139:14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

1 Samuel 16:7b For God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."

Still having issues with your reflection? Here's something that works for me, and you may have heard of the idea before. One day, looking into the mirror, I decided that I was done with seeing myself through the eyes of the world. I took out an expo marker and covered my mirrors with bible verses and phrases from songs that would remind me that I was wonderfully made. A phrase that still gives me freedom every time I look at it is from "Mirror" by Barlow Girl.

How to Wear Tank Tops Modestly!

I don't know about you, but it's super hot right now where I live! Actually, I think it's really hot all over the country! When the temperatures shoot up, it's very tempting to compromise modesty standards. I used to just stay away from tank tops completely because I didn't think it was worth it to try and find some that weren't too tight, too loose, too low, too short, etc. Well here are some tips on how you can stay cool while wearing tank tops but also not exposing too much skin or looking skimpy!

Don't show the Straps!
Now only are showing bra straps a stumbling block to our Christian brothers, but they just look tacky! I know it can be tempting to say "Come on! It's just a strap!" but hiding bra straps may be easier than you think and definitely is the right thing to do (Christian guys really appreciate it!)
Strapless bras are a great option because it solves the problem, no straps! If those work for you, go for it! But for me strapless bras just don't work. They're uncomfortable and keep sliding off (lol). So, racer back bras! (Bras that have crisscross straps like an "X" in the back). They make some bras that convert from regular to racer back so those are a great option.

Layers!
Layering can be great with tank tops! You can still wear that cute floral one even though the neckline is a bit to low because you can wear the solid white one underneath with the higher neckline! Just not too many layers (two thin ones is the max for me), the point is to stay cool!

Where do I Find these High-Necked Tank Tops?!
I get frustrated when people say "Oh just wear layers so your necklines are high enough!" but them I'm thinking "Ok well where do I find tank tops that come high enough!?!" Haha.
Old Navy in the girls section is has some great tank tops that come high enough (about two fingers below my collar bone.) I usually wear one of those and then another one over that because the girls ones are too short. I'm about a size medium in the ladies section and a girls XL tank top still fits me. But they're starting to get too small haha.
Another great place? The guys department! You can buy a package of 3 guys tank tops for about $10 at Walmart. They're high-necked, and long enough to tuck into your shorts. Then you can wear your favorite stylish one over it!
Aeropostale sometimes has some high-necked spaghetti strap shirts that you can wear under a tank top.

Here are my guidelines for modestly when it comes to tanks:
-No cleavage (4 fingers below my collar bone is the lowest I'll go.)
-No stomach when I raise my arms.
-Make sure the tank isn't too loose, you don't want to see anything in the arm holes! (Or just wear a tight fitting one underneath.)
-Not too form fitting.
-No bra straps.
-No spaghetti straps (they just look skimpy!)

With these tips, you can wear tank tops modestly! Searched and searched for a modest tank but can't find one? It's ok! Don't waste your time. Just wear a loose fitting, comfy t-shirt and you'll stay cool and look beautiful!

Please welcome Erin to the Mod Style Lounge staff! She will be taking over for Rachel. She is a beautiful 15-year-old with a huge passion for modesty and realizes that beauty really does come from within.

We asked her a few questions:

What are your views on modesty?

I believe that as women, modesty is something we should strive for every day- Modesty here not only referring to our clothing and outward appearance, but also to our mindset, learning to develop pure thoughts and motives. I feel, and am strongly convicted, that how we present ourselves should never cause a brother in Christ to stumble. This is why I make sure what I wear covers me up (and then some!), and leaves a good amount of mystery to my body. I think as Christian girls we should find balance in our dress. We can find ways to dress modestly while still being trendy and expressing our own sense of style.

What are your views on beauty?

We are all fearfully and wonderfully made, and I think it is important for girls to come to a point where they feel beautiful as daughters of Christ. When we learn to accept ourselves and find our value in the Lord, we will realize that the world’s definition of ‘beautiful’ is unrealistic and superficial. Again, there is a balance here. There is nothing wrong with fixing ourselves up and wanting to look good, but outward beauty shouldn’t be something we become overly concerned or obsessed over. We should focus on developing our inner beauty and growing in our walk with God. The Bible sums it up when it says that beauty shouldn’t come from outward adornments…but from our inner self. (1 Peter 3: 3-4)

What are your views on femininity?

I believe that as young ladies, we should embrace our roles and characteristics as women. God created men and women differently, and we should accept that while remembering that no trait or responsibility is more or less important. In the way we present ourselves I think we should maintain a sense of femininity and dignity. This doesn’t mean that we can’t dress casually and wear sporty clothes, but we should keep a ‘lady-like’ manner in the way we act and dress.

Au Revoir, Tout le Monde!

Hello all,

It's been nice writing for the Mod Style Lounge, but due to life's circumstances, I'm unable to continue. After some family issues and very busy times for me, I realized (with a slap in the head from God) that it was time for me to reestablish my priorities...and that includes dropping some things from my activity list.

It's been a joy to work with such wonderful people such as the MSL staff and to write for such wonderful readers such as yourselves. I will remain an avid reader as I move off into the other things that God has in store.

Summer Makeup

I don't know about you, but I hate wearing makeup in the summer. Haha really, it just melts off my face and makes me feel like a sweaty mess.

I prefer the natural, healthy, all-natural, sun kissed glow! :) But like most people, my skin isn't perfect. I'm not one of those girls that wears 3 inches of makeup, but I do feel a little uncomfortable if I'm not concealing problem areas.

So here's what my summer makeup routine usually is. First of all I would highly encourage you do take a break from (or most of) your makeup for the summer. My skin feels so much better when it can breath! And the sun (not hours in the sun and getting burned, but a healthy amount of time while wearing sun lotion) evens out my skin tone and gives it a healthy glow, also reduces blemishes!

So anyway, here's what I wear:

Devita Solar Protective Moisturizer SPF 30
This stuff is great. It doesn't really feel or smell like sunscreen so I usually wear it just as a face lotion even if I'm not going outside. It's great if you have acne prone or sensitive skin!

Neutrogena Skin-Clearing Blemish Concealer
Instead of covering my whole face with foundation, I just conceal on problem areas.

Then put on your favorite mascara and chap-stick or lip gloss. You're set to go! Yes, that's it! (Though sometimes I wear eyeshadow and/or blush to church...) Keep your look simple and you'll feel naturally gorgeous and summery!

Have acne?
-Wash your face twice a day.
-DON'T TOUCH IT! This seriously works! Touching your face just spreads bacteria!
Try this facial mask (it feels amazing!)
-One spoonful of coco powder
-One spoonful of honey
-One spoonful of plain yogurt
Mix it all together, apply to face, and wash off in 15-20 minutes. It feels so refreshing!

I use to be really insecure about my skin. But I hated wearing makeup in the summer because it just felt gross and washed off in the pool anyway. I learned that my skin isn't perfect, but that's ok! Really it is!Enjoy your summer and your natural, God-given beauty!

Beach Hair!

It's the time of year again! How I love spending hours in the sun and surf :)

One of my favorite hair styles for the beach, is beach hair of course! Here's a couple ways to get the look.

Overnight waves (if you prefer to shower at night):
1. After you've showered, and while your hair is still damp, spray with an anti-frizz spray (optional).
2. Divide hair equally into two even sections and braid two french braids. It's ok if they're messy :) If you want your waves to be smaller, divide into four even sections and do four braids. You'll look silly, but who cares! :)
3. Now go to sleep, sweet dreams!
4. Wake up and undo you braids. Finger comb them do not use a brush, they will become frizzy!
If you want to, use some texturizing paste to define the curls. I use Fructis Garnier Texturizing Paste.
5. Spray some hairspray if you want to, to hold the look. Not too much though, you don't want your hair to look crunchy!
Well there is the first method for beach waves!

Second method (if you shower in the morning):
1. While your hair is still damp apply some anti-frizz or wave spray. I use John Frieda Frizz Ease spray.
2. Next take a microfiber towel, and scrunch your hair for a few minutes. Flip your head upside down and to the same thing to add texture. When you flip your head back up, don't whip it or you'll loose the volume. Just slowly lift your head up and fold your hair over.
3. You can use the same texturizing paste as mentioned above for this look as well.
4. Once it dries, spray with hairspray or leave it as it is!

Natural Highlights:
Want natural highlights without paying a lot of money?
Try this:
1. Take some fresh lemon juice (it works better than bottled) and put it in an old spray bottle.
2. Spray in hair where you desire highlights (make sure you don't get it on your scalp or face! It will burn!)
3. Spend a day out in the sun.
4. Over time, your hair should naturally lighten!

Only try a little bit of lemon juice and spend a limited amount of time in the sun your first time, to see how your hair reacts. For some people, their hair becomes brittle.

Uses for conditioner…besides your hair

Have you ever bought a generic cheap conditioner to find out it doesn't do much to soften your hair or, on the contrary, makes your hair too limp and flat? Or maybe you just don't like it but you feel bad letting it go to waste. With these tips and secrets, you don't have to suffer through using it up and it won't just sit on a shelf in your bathroom closet.

Instead of shaving cream, use conditioner. It smoothes and protects from razor burn. It especially reduces irritation in those places with coarse hair like underarms and around pubic area (you know we have to shave there!). Then, after you're dry, use aloe vera gel to prevent little red bumps. This especially helps if you have really dry skin, because the conditioner moisturizes your skin and the aloe vera gel locks the moisture in!

Rub it all over your body and let it set for a few minutes before showering it off instead of using lotion afterward. It makes my skin feel so soft and smooth!

Use it as a makeup remover. I'm serious...this works! The mild cleansing factor easily removes the makeup, and the moisturizing factor keeps your face from getting dry when scrubbing the makeup off. It can be a lot cheaper than makeup remover, doesn't sting or burn, and doesn't dry out your face.

Got your favorite ring stuck on your finger and tugged and twisted with no avail? Rub some conditioner on your finger all around the ring. The conditioner should make the surface slippery and it’ll slide right off!

Not only does it help you remove rings from your finger, it can also be used as a jewelry cleaner, as it’s gentle enough for your most delicate jewelry, removes the dirt and oil, and gives the piece a brilliant shine.

Hello Readers!

I don'tknow about you, but I love the style of England's future queen, Catherine Middleton. From her engagement to Prince William to the royal wedding. Take a look!

Though the top is a little low, I love how Kate did a flowy dress (note: it is a dress) with a short, fitted jacket. Plus, the dress isn't to short. Her simple, yet classy heels make it syphisticated and elegant.

Who says Kate isn't a real girl? Jeans, a cute top (and modest too!) with those boots! Love those boots! Kate knows how to be herself :)

I love these colors on Kate! She accessorized very well! The scarf and hat compliment each other, and the jacket! Very fashionable and elegant!

Last but not least: her wedding dress... need we say more?

Hair, oh Hair, Whatever Shall I Do with You?

It's nearing the end of the school year (well, at least for seniors and college students, it is) and I am super excited seeing how this is my last year in High School! Anyway, as it moves in towards the final days, I always like to leave school with a haircut, leaving people with something to remember.

It doesn't have to be extreme, but something that makes you look different. Since I've detested having long hair for a while now, I chopped it off. And when I did, I breathed a sigh of relief. I like long hair on other people, but we just do not get along.

If you've had long hair for a while, or medium length, perhaps you'd like to jump over to the short hair bandwagon. if you can dare to part with the hair you've grown so close to over the years. Do some research into what style of short hair would be best for you, and then choose.

Taylor Swift certainly surprised us all by straightening her hair. If you're really sick of that curly/wavy hair that you've been stuck with your entire life (I don't know why you would though, I would certainly love it!), then perhaps you should investigate permanently straightening it.

Not sure that you want to do anything too dramatic? Try getting bangs, or restyling your bangs. If you've always had straight bangs, perhaps it's time to try side bangs or no bangs for a while and vise versa.

It's the end of the school year, let's leave people something visible to remember us by.

Spring/Summer Skirts and Dresses!

Don't you just love putting on a light, airy, flowy skirt or dress? I know I love too! It just feels so summery :)

I want to show you some of my favorite summer skirts and dresses that I wear to church, restaurants, or other special occasions (all are from Old Navy, my favorite store!)

Skirts:

Women's Tiered Gauze Skirt (shorter)
This is a super cute drawstring, lined, floral skirt. It may bit too short for you depending upon how short your like your skirts to go and how tall you are, so if it doesn't meet your modesty standards, I'm not encouraging you to wear it.Women's Tiered Gauze Skirt (longer)
How pretty is this? I just love long white flowy skirts!

I was disappointed that Old Navy didn't have as many longer skirts this year :/ Oh well! I still like the ones they have :)

Dresses:
Women's Tie-Shoulder Tiered Sundress
This was my Easter dress! I wore a yellow three quarter length sweater over it (I don't like wearing spaghetti straps.) It's super cute and comfy and hits just at my knee! It also looks cute with a t-shirt underneath if you want to look casual, but still modest!
This dress also comes in other cute floral patterns and solid colors.
Women's Jersey Sundress
This is a similar style to the dress above, but more casual and would be a great beach cover-up! Or wear it with a sweater for church or shopping with your friends :)
(Note: This dress may be too short for some people. However for me it hits just as the knee and I'm average height.)

Women's Ruffled Dress

Tips for a Clear Face

I, like many teens and young adults, have been cursed with what we call: acne. The mark of adolescence. But how do you unmark yourself from this plague? I’ll share a couple secrets that work for me.

1. Drink plenty of water. This will flush toxins and impurities out of your body. If you only drink soft drinks, the toxins will just come out of your pores, resulting in blemishes and those dreadful pimples. It also moisturizes your skin (along with using a moisturizing lotion daily) and the more moisturized your skin is, the less your skin tries to produce excess oil, which is the cause of acne.

2. Tea Tree Oil works miracles! Just put a drop or two on a cotton round or a Q-tip and use as a spot treatment when you have a breakout. Make sure you moisturize a few minutes afterward though, because it tends to dry out your skin.

3. Lemon Juice not only fights acne but it can also fade acne scars. Apply it to blemished areas. The acid in the lemons will minimize pimples and blackheads. You may want to do this before you go to bed and wash it off in the morning, because if the lemon juice is exposed to sunlight, it could make the scars darker instead of lighter.

4. Refrain from popping them. This might spread the infection, and even if it doesn’t, it may result in scarring. But what do you do to get rid of those big, ugly, annoying ones that just NEED to be popped? First, exfoliate the area, then hold a wet washcloth as hot as you can stand over the pimple to draw the puss to the surface. Then wrap your fingers with a tissue to avoid spreading bacteria from your hands and especially from under your fingernails. Pull the skin around the area taut and gently push it inward INSTEAD of squeezing at the pimple.

5. Change your pillowcase at least every other week, using each side for about a week. Dirt and oil from your face collect on the pillowcase and gather in your pores and clog them while you’re sleeping at night (sounds like a horror movie plot =D).

6. Wash your face before you go to bed. Even if you wash it in the morning (and you should), dirt gets in your pores throughout the day and pollutes your pillow even more if it’s not washed off. You’d have to end up changing your pillowcase every day because your face gets so dirty.

7. Switch products every so often, like when the one you're using stops working. A lot of times, when the weather changes, your skin may get more dry or more oily and cause sudden breakouts. Switch treatments to fit your current skin type. However, don't mix different brands of cleansers and toners and lotions. Stick with one brand at a time.

8. Acne treatment drying out your skin? Try washing your face in the morning with the acne treatment, then using a regular oil-free cleanser at night, or vise-versa, instead of using the acne treatment twice a day. Make sure to always be using a toner and lotion to regulate your skin’s natural pH and keep it hydrated.

9. When you sweat, make sure to rinse your face with clean water so all that stuff you just got out of your pores doesn't clog them again. Always finish rinsing your face with cool water, or as cold as you can stand it, to seal your pores and prevent more dirt/oil/bacteria from getting in. It will also give your skin a more "dewy" effect.

10. Remove your makeup at night. If you have good quality makeup, it won't clog your pores, but your skin still needs time to breathe. Make sure your makeup is not oil-based.

11. Ugly red pimple that won’t go away? Put a drop of Visine® or other redness reducing eye drops on the spot, then cover it with a green concealer, then a skin-colored concealer to camouflage it. The green will cancel out the red, and the eye drops will work to reduce the redness.

12. Pamper yourself! Just because you have acne doesn’t mean you have to miss out on luxurious spa treatments. Make the Lemon Tomato Mask and leave it on for 10-15 minutes. Click here to find it in Kaley’s Facial Fun post.

It's Getting Warmer, Girls!

Hello everyone! Spring is officially here (yes, I realize it's been here for a while, but where I live, it's been pretty cold still) and with spring comes warmer temperatures. I've already pulled out my shorts once and my capris a couple of times; I'm already addicted to flip-flops again!

If you're anything like me, you've put off buying shorts and whatnot for two reasons: 1) It still hasn't been quite warm enough for you to pull them out yet; 2) You hate shopping for shorts because you can't find modest ones, or; 3) You haven't shaved for months and are still too lazy to do so. ;)

I have to say, Old Navy is definitely one of my favourite stores recently for clothes and flipflops! They seem to have a lot of modest choices in a variety of colours and styles for a decent price.

I love these. On me, they go down to about two inches above my knee and have an eight inch inseam.

They're comfortable, flattering, and modest.

These may or may not be appropriate for you depending on your modesty standards and your body type. Let it be said that I never encourage you to buy something that you believe isn't modest. Also, just because I think that this may be appropriate and modest on some people, doesn't mean it may be on you. I have a pair of these and they go down to about mid thigh on me. They're extremely comfortable and are great for those warmer spring days and summer ones. :)

If you're more of a skirt person, this one's for you. I don't know the length and I don't have any of these, so I can't help you out there. However, on everyone I've seen wearing them, they hit the knee or go past it, and they're super cute! They come in a variety of colours and styles. So pick the one that best fits you and enjoy. :)

Last but certainly not least, FLIP FLOPS!!! Pretty self-explainatory. Hehe, pick up a few pairs--they're on sale now.

Overnight Curls - No Heat!

I love the all natural curls/wave look and I've been experimenting with my hair for a few months, trying to find a way to achieve it. I try to avoid heat on my hair everyday. For one, it dries it out terribly, especially in the winter, and curling my hair with a curling iron takes quite a bit of time, longer than I'd like to spend on my hair everyday.
After watching numerous Youtube tutorials, I finally came up with something that worked for me! It's super easy, quick, and no damaging heat!

1. Wash your hair before bed.

2. After you've towel dried your hair and while it's still damp, but not dripping anymore, spray all over with non-frizz spray (if you hair is prone to frizzieness. I use Dream Curls Curl-Perfecting Spray.)

3. Divide hair into two even sections (it doesn't have to be perfect) halfway up your head about where you would do a high ponytail.

4. Twist the two sections together tightly (but not too tight, wet hair is delicate!) like a rope and then twist into a bun and tie with a hair elastic. You should now have a tight bun. If it's pulling or uncomfortable in some places you may want to add another hair elastic or pin it with some bobby pins. Don't worry if it looks messy, no one will you see you, just make sure it won't fall out.

5. Go to bed, sweet dreams!

6. Once you've woken up, take out the bun. Your hair may still be a bit damp, but now you have pretty waves/curls! Finger comb them out, but do not use a brush it will make your hair frizzy!
7. Put on a headband, pin back your bangs, pull it back in a half ponytail, or add a pretty clip! I sometimes spritz a little hair spray to hold the style.

There you have it! Enjoy your pretty no heat curls! :)

Spring Beauty Ideas

Spring is coming and it’s time to try out some beauty ideas! For the new season, bright and happy is what to aim for as the weather warms, birds sing, and flowers come into bloom.

MAKEUP

The first makeup ideas is a pastel eye I did on myself. I laid a base color of lilac on my lid up to my browbone, then started on the inner corner with light green and gradually worked to a light blue. I lined my eyes with a pastel blue eyeliner.

The second idea is one I use on myself all the time. Purple is great because it works for every eye color. The picture is a bit dramatic, I usually do a toned down and less glittery version of it. It’s really easy; all you do is start with a light purple on the inner corner, working to a medium purple, then the darkest purple on the outer corner, so it gradually darkens. You can still do this if you only have two shades of purple, just add black underneath the place you want the purple to appear darkest and lay to purple on top. You can do this with a black shadow or eyeliner pencil or crayon.

The third idea is bit bolder than the last two. While the base color is black or dark grey, it is brightened up with a vivid teal. Line your eyes with black eyeliner, then use a grey or black on your lid. Surround the black area with a teal to brighten it up!

NAILS

I did these fun designs with some cool nail art polish I found at Walmart (Kiss Brush-On Nail Art Paint). They’re really easy, and it’s great because they don’t have to be precise, because on a real animal, no two markings are the same.

French Tip!

French Tip is classy but doesn’t have to be boring pink/peach and white. There are so many different varieties, like Reverse French tip (dark on nail, light on tip), and many different colors to use. You can also spice it up with nail-art. Flowers are great for spring!

Foundation and Concealer (My Favorties!)

I don't wear a ridiculous amount of makeup, but I like to wear some sort of concealer and foundation to cover up my blemishes. However, whenever I seem to wear powder on my face it makes it sweaty and shiny and just plain icky in just a matter of hours :/
But last week, I found a liquid foundation that covers up really well, but keeps my face dry all day! :D
I'd like to share my favorite concealer and foundation with you :)

Neutrogena's Microclear Blemish Stick
I love this thing! Hehe! It's meant to conceal and clear up pimples and I use it on my most visible red zits. I don't think it necessarily heals my pimples, but it doesn't make them worse unlike other concealers have used in the past! I found it for $9 at my drugstore.
Covergirl's Clean Liquid Foundation (Oil Control)
This is the foundation I use all over my face, and I'm very pleased with it because it really does what it says! (Whisks away oil and shine!) I've never found a liquid foundation that works so well! I use the version for oily skin, but they also have some for dry, sensitive, or normal skin. The only downside is it doesn't have a pump, but I don't really mind. I usually rub in on my face slightly, and then dab it with a sponge for a natural effect. (Sorry girls, I can't remember how much exactly it was...$7 maybe? It was no more than $10 though.)
New York Color Loose Face Powder
This powder is just really light and sets the foundation, covering and smoothing out any streaks or uneven spots. I love it because it's very light and soaks up any oil, making your look soft and dry! I think it's around $6.

Something beautiful is happening on Friday, April 22, 2011.

Four years ago, Gracie Flanagan came up with the idea for True Beauty Day her freshman year of high school. Her friend joked about how she really didn't want wear makeup to school tomorrow, so she and Gracie decided for the next week at school, they wouldn't wear makeup and would let their "true beauty" show. This was the beginning of the idea.

What Gracie realized is, "society has such a screwed up definition of beauty," and "every women, girl, and child is beautiful both inside and out; yet today’s society makes finding outer beauty harder and harder for millions around the world."

So Gracie decided to do something about it. She created a day where females could show their true beauty by not wearing designer clothes and wearing little or no makeup. The purpose of this was to show that "the makeup you're wearing and the brands you're wearing don't make you who you are," she says. "It's what's on the inside and what Jesus gave us that's important."

It’s Valentine’s Day, and even if you don’t have a special someone, romantic looks can be very feminine and beautiful. The romantic look is soft and subtle, but makes a point. If you’re a girl who likes lace, ruffles and pink, this look might be for you!

The first step to a romantic look is a skirt. Lacy skirts, ruffled skirts, pleated skirts. Skirts epitomize femininity. Choose a skirt or a dress in a soft pastel, like pale pinks, blues, or purples, or more neutral colors like beige or grey. Black may also work if softened with very small floral prints, or if coordinated with gentler colors, like in the picture below.

Tops are either flowy, made of fabrics such as chiffon or silk, or tighter fitting with lace or ruffles. Be careful to not overdo it. If you choose a flowy skirt, choose a more fitted top. If you choose a flowy top, wear fitted pants or a pleated pencil skirt instead of a flowy skirt. Don’t wear lace-on-lace or ruffles-on-ruffles. It can quickly look like too much.

Jewelry that works well with this style is small and pretty, sometimes vintage. Avoid statement jewelry for this look. To make a statement instead, wear delicate scarves, like silk or lace. Top it off with a flower or bow headband. Wear some dainty flats, wedges, or kitten heels on your feet, but avoid shoes too sassy, like pumps or stilettos.

Hair for this style is generally worn long, with big waves or soft curls. Everything is loose and natural-looking. If your hair is not naturally wavy or curly, use a large barrel curling iron for bigger spiral curls or create loose waves with a flat iron. Updos look effortless and feminine, like in this video:

The makeup is also very soft and feminine, mainly with pinks and whites. If you have a cool skin tone, opt for pinks on the rose side, but if your skin tone is warm, go for corals. Here is a photo of me with my favorite romantic makeup look:

• Foundation for this look should be the same shade as your skin or a shade lighter for a pure and angelic, flawless look. Avoid too dark foundation or bronzer, it may come off as “beach-girl”-ish.
• Blush is key. It gives you that feminine glow from within. If you use enough, you can go light on the rest. Blend it in well so it looks natural.
• Highlight below the arch of your brow and around your tear duct with your white eyeshadow.
• Cool skin-toned ladies: Use a darker pink to highlight your brow bone and a lighter pink on your eyelid. Warm skin-toned ladies: Use a brown to highlight your brow bone and a beige on your eyelid. Wearing the darker colors on your brow bone and the lighter colors on your lid will give you that innocent big eyes look.
• Long dark lashes are a must for a romantic look but clumps are a no-no. Use a good lengthening mascara in black, then go back through with a toothpick or a clean disposable mascara wand to separate and get rid of clumps.
• Finally, complete the look with sheer glossy lips. You can use a lip plumping gloss for kissable lips.
• You may also use an eye liner in black or brown to define your eyes to add to the big eye look. Use a pencil or crayon instead of a liquid liner for a softer line. This step is optional, but it will define your lashes and make them look thicker.

Valentine's Day Party

If any of you are anything like me, you have a stack of dresses in the back of your closet from the last prom/wedding/event that you attended (and all the ones before that!). Chances are that your friends have a stash in the back of their closet as well. I know that I'll take out one or two and put them on (and then proceed to dance around the house because no one is home) and it's so much fun. :)

So anyway, back to my point. We've got dresses in the back of the closet. We're girls who like to look pretty and get dressed up. And we've got friends who have the same thing going on. So what does that combination sound like? A party. Yep. :)

It is time to let all of your friends know really quickly that you'd like to host a Valentine's day party (no boys allowed! At least, that's what I say to my guy friends). Tell your friends a date and time and throw a spur of the moment Valentine's Day party where every one dresses up. Then be creative in what you do. You could have a time to show off your lovely dresses. Have a photo shoot. Act out a drama (acting is always so much more fun when you're all dressed up!)

Maybe this will become a tradition. And since Valentine's Day is just around the corner, you can always have a Post-Valentine's Day party, then maybe all your friends who have dates the previous date you chose will be able to go. :) Enjoy spontaneity and your party.

Cozy Winter Boots!

I've just come inside from shoveling, shoveling and more shoveling! So much snow! I'm now happily curled up inside near the fire and eager to type up a post :)

During the cold winter months, you'll need a cute pair of warm boots to sink your toes into, while still looking fresh and fashionable! Here are some my favorites:

Want a cute pair of Uggs without the price? I found these Ugg knock-offs at Target last year and I'm pleasantly surprised with how well they've held up while only costing $30! I bought the same ones but in chocolate brown :)

These are my second pair of boots. Slouchy boots are in this season and look fabulous with skinny jeans, denim pencil skirt, or with a comfortable sweater dress and leggings! I bought mine at Sears for $30. I love these slouchy boots because they're super cute and feminine and I find them more delicate and soft looking than say, Uggs. The only downside is, due to the slippery soles, they're not very practical for icy weather, so I tend to save mine for church or a quick errand and wear my Uggs (or Ugg knock-offs haha) when the snow is flyin' :)

These are my third pair of boots (I know, I know, a lot. But a girl's gotta have a pair of shoes for every occasion, right? Haha :)
These boots I wear for shoveling, playing outside, and sledding! They were a little pricey ($80), but not too bad seeing as they're Columbia brand and are oh so comfortable and warm! I love them because they're nice and light, (kind of like Crocs material. And heavy snow boots are just so...heavy haha :P) warm, and they don't look to bad if I do say so myself for being snow boots!
(Note: these are not my exact boots, I couldn't find the picture, but these are very similar.)

Well, those are my boots, but enough about me, haha! Here are some other super cute boots I found while surfing the web!

I think these short little flat slouchy boots (haha I'm not sure what they're called...) are just ADORABLE! Pair them with skinny jeans and long cardigan and you're set to go! You can find them at Payless for $30.

Now I don't know about you...but I LOVE cowgirl boots, haha! These American Eagle western, yet stylish heels can be found at Payless for $40.

Your Unique Style

I found this quote at the beginning of chapter two of Nina Garcia's book, The Little Black Book of Style (which you should all read, because it's a fantastic book). Upon reading further, I liked what she had to say, creativity and individuality being the root of style whereas fashion was simply obeying rules of do's and don't's. While I'm not suggesting that being 'in fashion' is bad, I am suggesting that your own style is better.

So, style. I'll admit, I was pretty happy about this when I read it since to be honest, I hate fashion. Yep, I'm writing for a modest fashion blog and I hate fashion. I do, however, like creativity, and I was pleased to find someone who was fashionable and appreciated creativity more than trends.

I'm not saying you have to go out and start trying on outrageous articles of clothing, nor am I suggesting you to try and be who you are not (one of the reasons I dislike fashion). Style is all about YOU.

I love this outfit. The dress, it's a pattern that I don't see a lot, which is why it particularly drew my eye. There are very rare times when I actually like an orange dress, however, this is one of those times. Not only is it extremely pretty, it's so exemplary of individual style. Somehow, the dress just fits the girl wearing it, but I couldn't just put it on myself and say 'this is style'. Style is individual, and you yourself are the only one who can show your own style. I certainly couldn't tell you wear to buy a dress like this (although, I will say that there is a pattern at Walmart that looks pretty similar ;) hehe).

The second outfit is just simply cute. The red shirt bringing a bold that isn't shown anywhere else in the outfit, the rest being simply a pair of ordinary jeans and a slightly unusual white shirt underneath. Style isn't necessarily bold nor exotic, it simply makes use of what you've got in a unique way. So raid your closets girls, see what you've got to project who you are through your clothing style.

I (Sarah) did a Q&A with Becca Ann aka pink_becca3 on her blog. She asks me questions about all things hair care, and common questions about split ends, hair types, and shampooing and conditioning. I'll include a piece of the interview here, and follow the link at the end to read the rest!

Becca: Is it true that the more you do stuff with your hair (like braids, straightening, etc) the more likely you are to get split ends or cause breakage and even more likely if your hair is wet?

Sarah: Yes, definitely. Wet hair is much more fragile than dry hair. Putting your hair in a ponytail can easily cause you hair to break because the hair expands as it dries and the ponytail holder cause stress to the strand, possibly causing it to break off. The same goes for tight braids. Not using a heat protection product on your hair when blow drying or using mechanical heat (like flat ironing or curling) can actually cause it to melt from the inside, even if you can’t tell from the outside. NEVER use mechanical heat on wet hair!

Becca: Is there any ways that you can make your hair grow faster by eating certain things, or using certain things?

Do you ever look at pictures or in the mirror and think, "Oh wow! My teeth are yellow,"? The day I got my braces off (Oh happy day!), I kept looking at my teeth and I thought the same thing, so I spent half of the day brushing them. It had very little affect.

Do you want to whiten your teeth without have to be constantly brushing them? Let me introduce you to some of my favorite beauty items!

Crest 3D White Toothpaste is an amazing toothpaste! It leaves my teeth feeling squeacky clean, literally, and they still feel clean hours after brushing them!

The Crest 3D Whitestrips do amazing work! Just apply the upper and lower strips, wait 45 minutes, and remove! You see results in 5 days! The box tells you to wear them twice a day, I don't. The whitestrips are kind of pricey, so I only wear them once a day, 5 days a week.

The Crest 3D Mouthwash brings freshness to your mouth. Swish it around in your mouth after brushing for a fresh and clean feeling! It really does help whiten your teeth, but it takes much more time than the whitestrips. I suggest buying this if you cannot get the whitestrips.

Of course, a good toothbrush is key in teeth whitening! I use whatever toothbrush is on sale. (I buy my Crest 3D using coupons found on their website.) A good toothbrush is a firm brissled one. If you have sensitive teeth, then use a softer brissled one.

Here are some quick tips on how you can whiten your smile...

* Brush your teeth after you drink hot tea or coffee. They can both stain your teeth pretty badly. This was actually the biggest problem with my teeth, coffee stains.

* Brush your teeth 3 times a day. Once in the morning, once in the evening and before you go to bed. Also, if you have to wear a retainer, make sure it is freshly clean too. Stuff from your retainer can get on your clean teeth and affect it.

* Brush once a week with baking soda. Put some of it one your toothbrush and brush your teeth. If you have sinsitive gums them I do not suggest doing this. Also, do not brush your teeth the entire day with baking soda. Trust me, your gums will be hurting and most likely bleeding. I learned this one the hard way. just brush them once really well and then rinse.

Since I've been using Crest 3D White Set, my smile has improved so much! I am always, and I mean always, smiling, so a yellow smile does not cut it with me! People have noticed that my teeth are whiter and that their proves to me that this stuff really works!

If you're anything like 99% of the other curly/wavy girls in this world, I'm sure you've frowned with disapproval looking at your curls in the mirror. You've probably thought more than once, "Why couldn't God make me have straight hair like my friends?" and believe you are destined to live with unmanageable, frizzy, curly hair unless you spend two hours a day straightening it. Well, I can certainly feel your pain...but I invite you to join me on a journey of learning to love our natural curls and take care of them! I would like to introduce to "The CG Method".

The first step is to eliminate/limit the use of shampoo to our hair. Most commercial shampoos contain surfactants that are very harsh on curls and dry them out, causing that frizzy, dry look. These are called "sulfates", and are usually recognizable by "sodium laureth sulfate", "sodium lauryl sulfate", or "ammonium lauryl sulfate". Curly hair tends to be more porous than straight hair, which makes totally rinsing out all traces of shampoo virtually impossible, and that residue causes frizz. Most conditioners contain mild surfactants that, paired up with a little friction, are more than able to lift off dirt and excess oil from our hair.

The next part of the CG method is using a light conditioner to clean your hair instead of shampoo most of the time. It really does work. Once in a while it's good to use sulfate-free shampoo to cleanse your hair, but cleaning your hair with a light conditioner actually removes dirt very well.

The following part of the CG method is using a thicker, more moisturizing conditioner to replenish your hair's moisture. A light conditioner to wash your hair is not enough alone. Frizz usually equals dryness, and curly hair needs a lot more moisture than straight hair.

Another part of the CG method is to remove silicones from our hair routine. A silicone is a damaging ingredient used in most hair products (usually conditioners, most creams, most serums, some mousses, and some gels...but rarely in shampoo) that creates a temporary "cover" on the hair shaft, and basically suffocates the hair follicle. Most times, it can give off an artificial portrayal of healthy, shiny hair, but what it's doing is creating a fake covering. In addition to this, it requires a harsh shampoo to remove. Look for any ingredient ending in "-cone," or "-xane," such as "Amodimethicone." That's all you need to look for. And if it has the abbreviation "PEG" before it, such as "PEG 14 Dimethicone," it means that it is water-soluble and CG friendly...easily removable. Make sure you clean really well after using one though. Personally, I like to avoid silicones alltogether to make things less confusing.

Sound complicated? It really isn't at all. There are 4 steps:

• Remove sulfate shampoo
• Use light conditioner to wash
• Use a thicker conditioner to further moisturize
• Remove silicones

*Some curlies/wavies need to wash their hair with sulfate-free shampoo more frequently than others, depending on how oily your hair is.

"Wash with only conditioner? I can't do that!" you may be thinking right now. "I will turn into a greaseball!" Don't be too hasty – try washing with only conditioner for a week. Yes, your hair may be horrible for a few days, but you need to give it time to adjust. It's been damaged with sulfate-laden shampoos and silicone-laden products for a long time. It can't adjust after one day. You need to give it time. During that time, wash with SULFATE-FREE (I'm REALLY stressing that!) shampoo once in that week.

If your hair is still really greasy after you’ve tried CG for two full weeks (give it time to adjust--like I said before, don't be too hasty), try a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo to wash your hair, followed by a moisturizing conditioner.

In anyone's case, your hair can get worse before it gets better. I'm sorry if that sounds threatening, but it is true...some curls take longer to adjust. It’s all about patience. But it will be worth it…the results are wonderful! Your hair will be softer, more manageable, much healthier, less frizzy, and more shiny.

"Okay, sounds great. Where do I start?"

Start looking for your sulfate shampoos and hair products. Now, THROW THEM AWAY! "But I don't want to waste them! Can't I just finish the bottle?" NO. Trust me. It's not worth it. Throw them away!

CONDITIONER (CO) WASHING:

Now, you'll need to get a light conditioner to cleanse your hair with. Try any Suave Naturals or V05 conditioner. They normally very cheap, about 99 cents, and they both work very well. If you don't like one, try the other. I use Suave Naturals Tropical Coconut, and sometimes I use V05 Strawberries n Cream. I love both.

Here is how to cleanse your hair with a light conditioner:

After wetting your hair thoroughly, pour a dime sized amount in your hand and using the pads of your fingertips apply to one spot of your scalp and massage well, just as you would with shampoo. Repeat until you've scrubbed all over, then rinse all the CO off with plenty of warm water, still gently massaging with your fingertips so the friction will dissolve any residue. Next, pour more CO in your hand, rub your palms together and apply over the length as you normally did in the past. Try to detangle with your fingers or with a very wide-tooth comb.

A THICKER CONDITIONER:

As I mentioned before, in addition to conditioner-washing, or co-washing, you'll need a thicker conditioner. There are some available in drugstores, such as Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition conditioner, and at Sally Beauty Supply, such as Generic Value Products conditioners (look at only the conditioners on this page, and review their ingredients...many of them are silicone-free: http://www.sallybeauty.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-SA-Site/default/Search-Show?prefn1=brand&prefv1=GVP)

A SULFATE-FREE SHAMPOO:

Clarifying - Sometimes it can happen that all residue from our gel, oils, etc. may not rinse off with water and CO and we get a little "buildup". Very often it's easy to notice right away that our hair feels "gunky" but other times our hair just seems to stop responding to the routine, it may begin to tangle easily or our curls loose definition and shine; clarifying will refresh them and usually bring the bounce back. Use this weekly or every two weeks.

If you have tried the CG method for more than two weeks and you see that your hair is still very oily, wash with sulfate-free shampoo every time you wash your hair...but if oil isn't the problem and your hair is a mess with CG, be patient.

STYLING YOUR CURLS:

• NEVER brush hair
• Detangle it only when wet and soaked in conditioner, using a wide-tooth comb or whenever possible just our fingers
• NEVER rub hair with the towel* but to gently blot the water off using scrunching motions with it
• Apply product gently preferably by scrunching
• Air dry hair whenever possible or diffuse only partially to avoid frizz
• Don’t touch it while it's drying.

Holiday Makeup Tips!

Oh how I love Christmastime! EEK!! *Squeals with joy* Christmas is only three days away!!
As I'm am typing this, I'm staring out the window at a field covered in fresh fallen snow. A multitude of snowflakes are dancing through the wind as cheery Christmas music plays from my favorite Pandora play list. *Happy sigh*. Haha, ok I'll get on with it...
With Christmas only three days away, you're bound to be attending a Holiday party, caroling with friends, or getting ready for a Christmas Eve service. Below, are some fun holiday makeup tips that will add sparkle to your outfit (literally LOL).

Gold Eyeshadow

Apply some shimmery gold and eye shadow to your eyelids, applying less as you get closer to your brow bone. Don't put too much on, you want to look as natural as possible and just add a little sparkle.
CoverGirl has some gold eye shadow, pictured below (that may not be the exact gold color).

Sparkly "Snow Covered" Eyelashes

After putting on gold eye shadow, apply your favorite mascara. Just one or two strokes. Next, while holding your eyelid up with a Qtip, apply a small amount of silver eye shadow on your eye lashes, which are still wet from the mascara. It will look like shimmery snow on your eye lashes!

If you choose to do the two looks described above, go easy on everything else. If you're focusing on eyes, you want to put only a small amount of makeup, or none at all, on your cheeks and lips.
Apply some soft pink blush to your cheeks, or if you're going caroling, your cheeks will turn naturally pink and you won't need any at all! Then put on some soft pink lip gloss and you're set to go!

Want a simpler look? Red lipstick. Just some bold, red, holiday lipstick. Nothing on your eyes or cheeks (maybe a light amount of mascara). And you're ready for a holiday party!
