The Good & Bad of '09-'10 Winter Trends

The winter season is upon us, so I thought I’d take some time to discuss the good and the bad of this year’s winter fashion.

Good:

Layering is in. Wear camisoles under tops that scoop low at the neck or like to creep up above your pants and show skin. Wear a short-sleeve over a long-sleeve or under a cardigan. A big thing for this season is a feminized blazer, like in the first photo below.

Flow-y tops are in. This provides us a relief from those curve-hugging tops (although they’re sadly still around).

Boots are in! This has nothing to do with modesty, but I love boots! :)

Purple is in! Again, nothing to do with modesty, but I love the color.

Scarves are in. Dress up your outfit with a colorful one!

Longer dresses are in. As in skirts that reach the knee or below the knee.

Bad:

Very tight tops are also in. Think thermal long-sleeve tees. No matter how big you buy them, they’re still tight.

Tight jeans and pants are still in. If not tight around the legs, they’re tight in the butt.

Animal print fur coats are in. This has nothing to do with modesty, but YUCK! Seriously. Those are dead animals you’re wearing.

Ripped jeans are in. It kind of depends where the rips are if this is bad. If they are high on your leg or in your butt area, this would qualify as a con. Or if they’re more like holes than rips.

Wearing leggings as pants is in. Leggings are not a bad thing, unless of course you wear them in place of your pants. Then it’s almost like you aren’t wearing pants. Check the photo above of the girl wearing the dress in the snow in the “good” section. This is how leggings should be worn, NOT like the girl in the black below on the far right.

See through clothing is in. *Oy* is all I can say. I will not include any pictures (you can thank me later).

Though the dresses are a little longer, one-shoulder straps are in. But hey, I gotta say at least it’s better than no straps.

While styles of the season can be fun, don’t become so obsessed with them that you can’t wear anything that’s not in style. If you like something, wear it and be proud! You can be the innovator of your own style. Remember this verse: “Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she smiles at the future.” (Proverbs 31:25) More importantly than wearing stylish clothes and being pretty on the outside is “clothing” yourself with beauty on the inside.

Come back Thursday to learn about another winter trend, the sweater dress, and how to wear it.

  1. There are trends but then there is STYLE! People need to realize trends fade but style is what lasts! I hate when people jump on the bandwagon because everyone is doing it! Do it because you love it, not because your fave blogger is doing it! Ugh..*stepping off soapbox* ;)

  2. I totally agree with you, Elaine. We stress that you can be the innovator of your own style, and wear what you want, how you want to, and not needing to wear things everyone else is wearing, even if you don't like it. If you wear what you like, people will notice and maybe you'll start you own trends! Thanks for the comment! :)

  3. Yeah, I tend to go for some pretty...wild clothing! (Wild in a good way...like what most people would consider weird wild!) :) I AGREE on the leggings thing! I HATE those new ripped ones! So immodest! I actually have a tip on the whole "ripped jeans" thing! I put fabric behind the holes that are too high. God convicted me one day about the holes in my jeans above my knee. It went kind of like this....
*glance down at jeans* *blush* "Gosh! I didn't realize they were that high!" So, I put white fabric behind all the rips that are above my knee. It worked pretty good acutally! But theres nothing you can do to the ripped leggings/tights! : )P
If anyone is interested, I also have a modesty blog! www.natashaakterson.blogspot.com

  5. ahaha! Yeah, I must say the most happy "trend" that I am happy with [and will buy up since i'm sure it soon will be out with spring/summer around the corner] is the skirt issue. I am SO SICK of seeing short skirts! HATE them ew! I'm a married 25 year old [almost 26] mother of TWO. i don't want to "flaunt" anything except my snazzy style haha! Great blog...I now follow!
