Meet Madeline!

Hey, ladies! We have a new addition to our team at Mod Style Lounge. Madeline will be filling in for Kaley for a while, and maybe become a permanent member if she likes it. I'll let her introduce herself:


How old are you?
I am 18 years old.

In what state were you born?
The beautiful state of North Carolina.

In what state do you currently live?
North Carolina.

What does "beauty" mean to you?
Beauty to me is defined by what's on the inside. If you're a beautiful person on the inside then it will radiate on the outside.

Which aspect we cover is your favorite? (clothes/hair/makeup)
Denfinitely clothing, I love to shop!

What is currently your favorite movie?
She's the Man and One Night with King are two of my most favorite movies they never get old to me!

What is your current favorite book?
Just Listen by Sarah Dessen

What is your favorite music album?
Outsiders by Need to Breathe. It has a great folksy sound!

What is your current favorite style?
I like a lot of them and wear a lot of different looks but I really like the urban girly look.

What is your current favorite Bible verse?
Esther 4:12-14 "Do not think in your heart that you will escape the king's palace anymore than all the other Jews. For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arrive for the Jews from another place, but you and your father's house will persih yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?"

I think this verse is a great reminder that this is a time such as this to do what God has called us women to do.

What is your most favorite thing about being a girl?
This is such a difficult question for me because I love a lot of things about being a girl! But I love that God considers us as princesses. When I was really little my dad would call me his princess so when I think of God calling me a princess it reminds me that God loves me like a father loves his daughter.

What is your least favorite part of being a girl?
Lets just say it happens once a month and makes me crabby! haha

What would you like to do after you graduate?
Well after I graduate I will be attending Southeastern University in Lakeland, FL so I guess that is what I'd like to do!

What are some hobbies you have besides fashion and beauty?
I ballroom dance! I know it sounds extremely old fashion but it is a ton of fun!

Tell us something interesting about yourself?
Well I can't really say I have anything too interesting about myself, I'm just a girl who loves to follow after God's heart and try my best to please him in everything, including fashion and beauty. I was super excited when I got asked to help because I think this is such a cool way to glorify God. What could be more fun than talking about something you love and including the one you love to be a part of it?!

Lotion Scoring and Homemade Sugar Scrubs


If you missed my post on Wednesday, I recommended my favorite lotions to you. Now, to help you make your decision, I tested them out just for you. =) Here are the results:

Shea Butter

Application Counter: 3
Notes: A pretty oily feeling right after applying, but it goes away quickly. Hands stay soft and smooth for over 3 hours.


Virgin Coconut Oil

Application Counter: 3

Notes: Hands have a little bit of an oily residue on the top, but not as much of a “slippery hands” feeling as the Shea Butter. It also will last for a good 3 hours, but it doesn’t quite have that soft, smooth feeling to the dimension the Shea Butter did.


Natural Lotion with Aloe Vera

Application Counter: 4

Notes: Hands do not feel oily (well, because it’s aloe, not oil!) and feel very soft and soothed upon application. This one only seems to last for about 2 hours, though.

Another great way to get smooth hands (and feet, for that matter) is a sugar scrub you can easily make at home. It gently peels away the dead skin. Here’s how to make it:

A small glass jar (don’t use plastic, because it will soak up the oil.)
1 cup sugar
½ cup olive oil
Essential oil of your choice
A metal spoon (plastic and wood will soak up the essential oil)

Pour the sugar and olive oil into the small glass jar. Mix with spoon. Add about 5 drops of essential oil, or until you think it smells good. Mix and enjoy!

Here’s how to use it: When you take a bath, rub on your hands and feet to remove dead cells and moisturize dry skin. Also works great for exfoliating your legs for a closer shave!

Winter Hands

Winter is the time for uncomfortable, itchy, dry hands. If you’re like me, no matter how many lotions you try, you can’t get rid of those winter hands.

My family is really big on natural stuff. We think like this: whatever we put on our skin gets inside our bodies, and if we can’t pronounce the ingredients, we don’t want it in our bodies.

Besides having some strange ingredients, those cheap smelly lotions don’t work well. They only moisturize for a short while.

Before I tell you which lotions work and why, it’s important for you to know why skin get dry.

The main reason for dry hands is lack of moisture (obviously, right?). This becomes more prevalent during wintertime, mostly caused by either exposure to the cold and wind, or being inside dry, closed up houses for the winter.

My first choice for lotion is Shea Butter Lotion. It brings comfort to itchy hands and actually helps your skin absorb moisture better, resulting in soft hands. Here is one I like:


Earth Therapeutics: Hand Remedy Shea Butter Lotion 6 fl. oz. $7.99

Another great one is Virgin Coconut Oil Lotion. Yes, coconut. Those hollow brown things with white stuff inside. It’s said the Filipinos, who are known having soft skin, swear by this stuff. It works amazingly on dry skin. Here’s my favorite kind:


Tropical Traditions Organic Moisturizing Lotions. One 8 oz bottle goes for about 15 bucks. You can choose from six natural scents, including unscented. My favorite scent is citrus (the green one).

If you can’t find or afford these lotions, try looking for a natural lotion with Aloe Vera as a main ingredient. It has a soothing affect on itchy skin and helps replenish moisture, sort of like Shea Butter. Here is a product I love:
The Naked Bee: Orange Blossom Honey Moisturizing Lotion, 2.25 oz $4.99. As a bonus, it smells really good!


Lotion tips:

• Get it all over your hands (around your fingernails too), but keep in mind that a little goes a long way.

• When washing your hands, don’t wipe your hands completely dry. This will rob your hands of much needed moisture. Instead, pat them until they’re damp and let them air-dry the rest of the way.

• Apply before bed. This will give the lotion time to work, since you won’t be washing your hands or doing dishes while you’re sleeping (at least I hope not!).

• Since hot water dries out skin, when doing dishes during the day, or anything with your hands immersed in warm water, wear rubber gloves. Rubber gloves don’t have to be ugly. Check out these cute ones: http://www.gloveablesinc.com/gloves/view_all.htm. I use the pink dot ones and they work great!
