Budget Beauty

If you’re the kind of girl who is always hunting for bargains, this post is for you! Or maybe you’re a college student who doesn’t have much extra money. Everything in this post can be found at drugstores and is $12 or under! Click on the title of each to find out more.

First things first. To start your beauty routine, you first need to cleanse your face. If you have acne like me, you’ve probably tried tons of products out there. I’ve even tried expensive products, but this by far is my favorite. It works quickly and cleanses deeply. It finishes by giving your face a cooling, minty feeling. I love it! Even if it didn’t work, I would still love the cooling feeling. =D
I use this in the morning and follow with a witch hazel toner and a light oil-free moisturizer, then use a gentle scrub at night to exfoliate dead cells for deeper pore cleansing. Using a scrub will keep your pores clear and prevent acne, but using a scrub more than once a day may be too harsh for your skin and cause redness.

I use this for the rest of my body, and I love it so much! It’s super moisturizing and makes my skin really soft and lightly scented. It lasts a really long time which is a bonus for you barganistas! It seems really concentrated because a small amount lathers well on wet skin. My favorite is Pomegranate and Lemon Verbena, but the other two smell delicious as well! Also, their Go Fresh deodorant is probably the best I ever used.

This foundation is said to be comparable to the high end NARS Sheer Glow Foundation! The price is 49 cents over the limit, but I promise it’s worth it! It really is one of the best drug store foundations. It has a very natural, dewy look, and says “the exclusive blend plus SPF 20 work together to visibly improve skin's luminosity, tone, and texture”. There is a wide color range to choose from to find your perfect match. The formula is lightweight and silky, but still has nice coverage.

Rimmel Lasting Finish Blush and Natural Bronzer

Rimmel is a great drug store brand, I use their lip liners in my makeup kit for work. These are only around $4-$5 and are nicely pigmented, but not too dark, which dark is something you don’t want in your blush and especially bronzer. The bronzer has a small amount of shimmer, but not too much and it’s not like the chunky glitter you’ll often find in drug store bronzers.

NYX HD Eyeshadow Base

This eyeshadow primer is said to be comparable to Urban Decay’s Primer Potion, which is the bestselling primer out there! But instead of $18-19, it’s only $7! I love many NYX products, they are one of the better brands that sell for less. I’m not sure how many drugstores they sell in (I know they are in some but they’re not in my local stores), but you can easily find them online or at ULTA.

This eyeshadow is very pigmented for a drug store brand. Typically, I stay away from drug store eyeshadow because with most of the cheaper kinds, you’re actually paying more for less in the end because they’re a lot less pigmented than the expensive brands. While you are paying $8 for 2 colors, this duo is comparable to brands that you’d pay around $20 for 2 colors.

This is good stuff! As good as any expensive liner I’ve tried. I love that it has a felt tip instead of brush because it’s easier to get a precise line without fraying.
If you like pencil or crayon liners, try L'Oreal Paris HiP Studio Secrets Professional Chrome Eyeliner. I’ve heard they’re comparable to the Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliner, which in my opinion, is the best eyeliner on the market.

This is my favorite mascara ever! It’s in an adorable package and has an awesome brush that separates each lash for longer, darker, thicker, and overall more defined lashes. It leaves your lashes soft and flexible unlike the stiff feeling of most other mascaras. And since it is natural and not waterproof, it’s better and more moisturizing for my eyelashes; it doesn’t dry them out and eat away at them and is easy to remove with soap and water. The best thing you can do to get lush, thick, long lashes is to take good care of your natural lashes underneath the mascara.

If you liked the original Burt’s Bees Lip Balm, you’ll love the Lip Shimmer! It’s just like the balm but adds some color to your lips. My favorite shades are Watermelon and Rhubarb. Champagne would be perfect for those popular pinky nude lips.
If you’re more of a lip gloss girl, try Burt’s Bees Super Glossy Natural Lip Shine. I love this. It moisturizes and has a delicious fruity scent to it.

What’s better to complete your makeup routine than with a white smile? A couple months ago, I’d been noticing my teeth have been looking dull in pictures. I heard good things about this toothpaste, so I decided to give it a try. Since I’ve been using it, people have noticed my whiter smile!
I like using it with the Crest 3D White Multi-Care Rinse for a cheaper alternative to the whitestrips.

And before you leave the house, don’t forget about your hands! If you’ve ever shook hands with an attractive person with not-so-attractive hands, you know how this can change your perspective. This intensive hand cream is perfect for the winter months and the dry skin that comes with it because it hydrates naturally with jojoba oil and works deep so you don’t have to keep reapplying it. Your skin instantly feels softer when you put it on.

At the end of the day, it’s important to remove your makeup before you go to bed. I love these makeup remover cloths! They are gentle enough to use around and even in the inner rims of your eyes, but tough enough to remove my waterproof eyeliner. I just buy the refill pack, because the package is resealable, so it keeps them moist. They are pretty big and I don’t need to use the whole cloth, so I always tear them in half (or in thirds!). That way they last me twice as long!

And the total if you would buy one each of the products I mentioned would take us to about $112 (which is kind of ironic since everything was under $12). Not bad for everything you need for your beauty routine, huh?

I was curious how much it might cost buying high end products that work just as well as these and the total was $415! WOW! Talk about saving money! You just saved over $300! ;D

Also, I am still looking for a good drug store concealer. I’ve tried Physician’s Formula, which is chunky and horrible (I bought it because I liked that it came with green concealer to cover up redness), and Neutrogena’s Skin Clearing one, which is okay. It works to clear blemishes doesn’t conceal well because it’s too liquidy, not creamy enough. I’ve heard the Revlon Photo Ready concealer is good, has anyone tried that or any other concealer you recommend?

What are your favorite bargain beauty products? Do tell.

Suave Dry Shampoo Vs Tresemme Dry Shampoo

How many of you wash your hair everyday? I do, because my hair gets so oily at the roots. Did you know that the oil in your hair keeps it healthy? One way to keep you hair healthy is by not washing your hair everyday and taking advantage of those natural oils, but how can you get rid of your oily scalp without having to wash your hair?

Dry shampoo keeps the natural oils in your hair, but keeps your hair looking freshly washed and oil-free. I recently discovered that both Suave and Tresemme make a dry shampoo. I tried both of them and I would like to share my input on both.

Suave Dry Shampoo Spray: This dry shampoo is quick and easy to use. You simply shake the bottle well, spray it about 12 inches from your scalp and massage it in. That’s it! Easy, right? It will still appear a little oily after you apply it, but that will go away after a few minutes.

I loved Suave’s Dry Shampoo Spray because of how easy it was to use. It's three simple steps; shake, spray, massage. There is nothing to it, plus it smells wonderful! It reminds me of grapefruit.

Suave’s Dry Shampoo Spray is also very affordable! I did not expect a cheap, dry shampoo to work as well as it did! It works just like a product that salons would use and that is saying something.

Tresemme Fresh Start Voluming Dry Shampoo: Normally, I love Tresemme's products, but this product got two thumbs down from me. First, It takes longer to use than the the Suave Dry Shampoo Spray. You have to shake the can 'vigorously', spray and wait 2 minutes before you can even work in the dry shampoo.

Second, though the product works, it leaves your hair feeling dry and grimy (like a poorly washed plate of mashed potatoes. I know this because our dishwasher doesn't like to complete it's cycle.) Every time I went to touch my hair, I would pull back my hand and frown because it felt so bad!

So, if you decide to use a dry shampoo (which I suggest!), I would use Suave's Dry Shampoo Spray!!

I'm Thankful For...

Thanksgiving is almost here! As I'm thinking about things in my life that I'm thankful for, I though it would be fun to talk about fashion staples I'm thankful for! There are things that get me through a bad hair day, keep me modest, or just add a touch to my look that I take advantage of! It might seem cliche but here we go... :)

1. The Bobby Pin!
I don't know where my hair would be without bobby pins. I keep them in my purse, in my
pocket, I find them in random shoes :), I always have one on me! You can use bobby pins in so many ways. Use them to pull back your bangs, to secure a poof, to create a half-up style, to pin back loose hair and so much more! Click here for more ways to use the bobby pin!

2. Tank tops!

In a world of plunging necklines and sheer tops, tank tops and camis are life savers! Layer them to create a modest look or even to add a pop of color. My favorites are the camis with the built in bras (That you can totally cut out!). They seem tighter to me so they won't sag or gape.

3. Leggings!
Also for the sake of modesty I'm thankful for leggings! When a skirt is just an inch or two too short add leggings for more coverage. Leggings, cotton and nylon, can make a look more appropriate and help you feel more comfortable and covered. Don't tell, but I like wearing leggings when I don't want to shave that day! :) Another great use of leggings is for warmth! Cotton leggings work great on cold days, and look super cute with a pair of boots!

4. Earrings!I don't wear a lot of jewelry, but I do like having a simple set of earrings in. I have double lobe piercings and like to wear silver studs with little hoops, but all girls have their own favorites. Pick earrings that match your style, and add the subtle or dramatic touch that you want.

5. Cover-up!

Cover-up is possibly the best product ever invented. Don't know what I would do without it! Whether its a little zit or a huge pimple, I can disguise it with just a little dab! I am definitely not a makeup expert, but I feel like my little walmart cover-up does the job! If you want tips from someone who knows their make-up a lot better than me, click here.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!

5 Acne Remedies!

Over the years I've suffered from mild acne...which I happen to hate! Who doesn't?
I know there have already been a couple posts on acne remedies, but I would like to share the ones that have worked for me!:)
These are all natural, home remedies that can be made with products you probably already have around the house. So, they are healthier for you and if they don't work, you haven't wasted a ridiculous amount of money.

1. Lemon Juice
Simply squeeze the juice of the lemon and keep in a container in the refrigerator. I usually apply it all over my face with a tissue (or cotton ball) each night. It may sting a little, but the results are worth it. I've been doing this for about a week and my blotchy spots and acne scars are definitely fading away. My skin tone has evened out and I have had very few new breakouts. I would suggest only putting this on at night because it makes your skin sensitive to the sun and too much lemon juice is dehydrating to your skin.2. Water!
Drinking enough water definitely improves your skin! I started drinking more water (at least eight glasses of 8oz water per day) and I have noticed an improvement in my skin!

3. Don't Touch!
I've always read that it's unhealthy to touch your face but I never believed it was so true! Touching your face spreads bacteria, creating more blemishes. When I am diligent in not touching my face, there is an obvious improvement in my skin!

4. Pore Strips
They clean your pores, removing black heads and white heads. I use pore strips about once or twice a week and then apply an acne medication right afterwords because my pores are clean and the medication will be more effective (I use either toner or lemon juice). Over the course of a couple weeks, your pores will also appear smaller!

5. Honey Mask
Apply this to an area that's scarred from past acne, or currently breaking out. Mix equal amounts (depending on how much you need) of honey, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Honey is hydrating and soothing and cinnamon and nutmeg heal acne and smooth out skin. Apple once or twice and week and leave on for about 15 minutes.I hope these work for you! Have a great day!

Inside his brain...

I’m sure you hear about what guys like about a girl’s personality all the time, right? I do, which made me curious about what guy like about the more outwardly things, like beauty and fashion. So I decided to see what goes on inside a guy's brain about how girls look, dress, even smell. I asked some Christian guys their opinions about what is attractive on a girl…and what is not. Remember, these are only personal opinions!

DO’S:
·         Wear fruity perfume.

After interviewing several guys, I realized that guys pay more attention to smell than we would think. One of the first things the guys said was attractive was the way the girl smelled.

“Good fruit smelling lotion is nice, guys remember that for some reason.” - Nate, 17, from California

“I seem to remember a girl by her smell, so pay attention to that, suit it to your personality, if you're fun go for fruity, if your more smooth go for a deeper smell.”  - Quartly, 17, from New Zealand

“There's something in my sniffer that just fires me up when a girl walks by with a sweet, slightly fruity perfume that just about overwhelms me. I LOVE IT!!! And if I ever see the person, and see 'em again, I hope they walk by so I can catch another whiff. LOL!” Grant, 21, from Kansas

Fruit scents are easy to adapt to your own personality! If you’re more lively, go for perfumes with notes of citrus fruits, but if you’re on the quieter, more mysterious side, go for perfumes with notes of berries or pomegranates.

For the outgoing girl, try Clinique Happy Duet, which includes a perfume spray and body cream. It has a light citrus fragrance and also a bit flowery, so it’s feminine but not overpowering.

Clinique Happy Duet $30

For the more reserved type, try Bath & Body Works Midnight Pomegranate. It includes other mysterious scents, such as blackberry and jasmine.

Bath & Body Works Midnight Pomegranate Eau De Toilette $29.50

·         Dress like a girl and be yourself.

“I was at a Christian music festival, and all the girls wore ripped short denim shorts and Tshirts, but the girls who stood out wore jeans, dresses, and just something different from the crowd.” - Quartly, 17, from New Zealand

“A turn on would be slimmer fitting clothes but not like skin tight.” - Nate, 17, from California

“Cute "form fitting" clothing tastefully frames the inherent beauty and shapeliness that God gave women for their beauty.” Grant, 21, from Kansas

When you dress stylishly and tastefully, it shows your personality and that will attract the right kind of guy for your character. Dressing in flirty, skimpy clothes, will attract a guy who wants you for the wrong reasons.
Check out my post about clothing personalities and styles to help you find yours if you’re not quite sure what your style is. http://modstylelounge.blogspot.com/2011/06/what-is-your-clothing-personality.html

·         Wear pretty earrings and/or small jewelry.

“I like earrings with a li'l sparkle to them, and not too gaudy. It really all depends on the girl for what they can wear.” - Grant, 21, from Kansas

“I like the skinnier long earrings, but as long as they're not those like huge circle designs!” - Steve, 16, from Pennsylvania

Some jewelry is nice but too much gets annoying to me.” - Nate, 17, from California

Look at these adorable stud earrings from Claire’s, only $8.50 each!

DON’TS:
·         Obsess about your hair

“Let your hair be natural, don’t try and do too much with it.” - Nate, 17, from California

“I know they ruin your hair, but I think hats are awesome on girls.” - Quartly, 17, from New Zealand

Punk or trashy...no thanks. I like natural, long hair, and a simple hairstyle. Sure, make it pretty every once in a while, curl it a little for a few waves in it. It looks great! But I LOVE a girl's beautiful long natural hair! Don't feel like you have to spend 3 hours on a ritzy hairdo just for your guy, or anyone in general.” Grant, 21, from Kansas

*** To achieve the natural hair look without looking frumpy, play up your natural texture! If you have a natural wave or curl to your hair, try the Living Proof No Frizz to line enhance it and avoid frizziness. You can buy it a Sephora.

*** If your hair is naturally straighter, run a flat iron over the parts that aren’t as straight to clean it up. Make sure to protect it from the heat to keep it soft and beautiful! Try TreSemme’s Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray. It smells delicious, kind of like Kool-Aid! You can pick it up at Walmart or a drug store. http://www.tresemme.com/Products/Heat/Thermal-Creations-Heat-Tamer-Spray/

Bad hair day? Slap on a cute hat! Check out my post about hats for your face shape to find which kind would look best on you. http://modstylelounge.blogspot.com/2010/07/hey-you-with-face-shape.html

·         Wear a lot of makeup

“Too much makeup makes the girls face looks like a painting.” - Nate, 17, from California

Lots of makeup…puuuuke. I want a real girl, not a plastic plated one. Enhance beauty a little, not try to make it.” Grant, 21, from Kansas

A great way to bring out your natural glow without a lot of makeup is a blush/bronzer. For winter, bring out those rosy cheeks with Physician’s Formula Shimmer Strips Custom Blush & Highlighter. It gives you that blushed look like you’ve just been out in the cold and highlights at the same time. Just swirl and go!

For summer, try Physician’s Formula Happy Booster™ Glow & Mood Boosting Powder. It gives you a nice tanned glow like you’ve been in the sun a lot, plus, it’s supposed to boost your mood with natural plant extracts of Euphoryl and Violet. Who doesn’t like a happy girl?

For both winter and summer, use Stila’s oil-free sheer color tinted moisturizer SPF 20. It is sheer coverage so it looks very natural, evens out skin tone and gives a dewy glow, leaving you looking fresh. I love it because it contains chamomile to help soothe and eliminate redness and improve elasticity. It’s great for summer because it’s water resistant and the sun protection factor, and great for winter because it’s a moisturizer.

Rub this over your face, apply one of the above, slap on a little mascara, and you’re good to go!

What did you think of these guys’ opinions? Were they helpful or not? Let’s chat!
